    D2a wheels

    Hi all,
    I have a 2003 d2a with 18 inch wheels I want to run a more aggressive tyre I was thinking of dropping back to 16inch rims just wondering what others have done

    Going 16" would be the best option as the tyres will be far cheaper and give you more range to select from. Also as you will have taller side walls will be smoother and flex more at lower pressure.

    Any D2 rims fit,same for P38a Rangie rims if you find them.Some P38a rims are 8" wide if you are chasing big rubber,MOST D2 16" are 7" wide.

    I bought 18" AT tyres. Been fine even in really really soft sand.

    If you do a search you will find numerous threads that list the available wheel options to suit both OEM LR and aftermarket including sizing and offset.

    I would recommend that you buy early disco 2 16x7 rims if you want to fit say 31 inch tyres (245.75x16)
    I bought a set of 8 inch wide 38A rims and was forced to fit 255.70x16 because the tyre places were unhappy to fit 245 on an 8 inch rim.

    I would have preferred 245.75x16 for the sidewall height, and I reckon they are the ideal ratio tyre for on road and off road.

    If you want to go bigger than 245.75x16 eg 265x75x16 then the 8 inch width is not a problem.

    Same..General Grabbers AT2..sand rock and mud all good so far....

    Talk to me after you go to the Flinders Ranges or the GRR.
    Depends on your usage.
    I found my 18s with cheapo Chinese ATs on them OK in sand also, but I wouldn't like to hit a big sharp rock with them., or drive along the sharp flints on the Flinders roads with em.
    But then I am an olde Farte who actually likes sidewalls on tyres.

    My brother and I have used GG AT2 in 255/55R18 size for a few years, including trips to Innamincka and Uluru/Simpson, we're of the opinion that the tread pattern is excellent in all terrains and wears well BUT they're not particularly strong as there's no LT for 255/55R18 or 255/60R18.

    I killed one in the Flinders Ranges doing the whole SkyTrek at Willow Springs: a shoulder leak on a front tyre which accepted a repair for about a week but also damaged the sidewall belts resulting in sidewall bulging.

    I also had two others on the rear die from rocks simply piercing the casing/punching straight through the tread - leaving inch-long tears through the whole carcass when viewed from the inside. Granted, I was heavily loaded and driving quickly on 'big rock' roads - but two other vehicles doing the same thing had no problems and these tyres were only weeks old.

    My brother was using the GGAT2 during the Innamincka trip and suffered two 'through the tread' punctures like I did on the Uluru/Simpson trip.

    When he had the GGAT2, I was using Nitto Terra Grapplers (255/55R18) and I had no dramas.

    When I was running the GGAT2 he was running GGAT (the newer pattern) in 255/60R18 and he had no dramas.

    I ended up using a really old Terra Grappler after the second GGAT2 died on the Simpson/Uluru trip. Also had to buy two Cooper HT pattern (the only two in my size) tyres to negotiate the road from Birdsville to Quilpie.

    Our experience is hardly a comprehensive study but my take is that they're excellent (particularly in sand) UNLESS you want to tackle rocky roads/terrain (think fist-sized rocks, not gravel).

    I'm moving to 16" wheels and BFG AT in 255/70R16 or 245/75R16.

    GG AT2 are a great tyre. They must be LT though and not all sizes are. A mate and I used them to good effect but I found for towing there is too much side wall flex for my liking. I keep coming back to Maxis Bravo 751 AT - they are just the bees knees and dirt cheap too!

    Lets be honest the 18's look better the 16's ARE better for offroading. BUT 18's are still better than 20's!!!!
