Thread: Vibrations and brakes

A while ago I had some bad vibrations in the car. Spent ages going through everything like donuts, bushes etc.
I ended up finding that it was the brake caliper that was causing the problem. There are 2 sliding pins on each caliper than move and allow the brakes to centre on the disc. One of these was stuck solid (rusted on) and after cleaning it up the vibration was gone.
But a few months later it was back. I went around to the other brakes and found a front caliper had the same problem. The rubber boot was cracked and the pin would not budge. After hours of wacking and hitting and wd40 I have given up and bought another 2nd hand caliper.

Is this a common problem? Has it happened to others?

Also should the pins be sliding in grease? There was a bit of very dried grease on some but I have cleaned the pins up with emery paper and just sprayed them with silicon spray. I thought grease would just dry up again.

Every time I do brake pads I remove these pins and chuck a bit of grease on them. I just use ordinary grease.
