Hi all while my autos out i thought i would replace the rear main seal not that it was leaking but with 280000ks up i would hate it to start ,getting the old one out was easy but to fit the new one isn't well not with the sump on but i don't wan't to take the sump off again as i had it off 2mth ago to stop a leak and its sealed good and its a horrible job not hard but you just can't stop the oil from seeping down for days has any of you guys tried fitting one with the sump in place the new seal i got is a BearMach brand and it don't look as good as the old one, looks kinda cheapish compared to the OEM one.
I've replaced mine in situ, I used plenty of Permatex Ultra Blue Multipurpose RTV Silicone Gasket Maker. The seal is still perfect 35000ks later.
I think I did have to cut some rubber, and clean of the old silicon. It was hard to get the seal in because you can't skew the seal in as you have to slide along the crank. So it can done. But if you have the time just drop the sump, you may even be able to just undo the sump bolts a inch or so then you can just hang the sump down a bit.
Triumph Rover Spares in SA claim they don't fail, only a handful in all the years they've been out was what they told me.
They were doing a tranny replacement on mine and I asked if they'd do the seal if there was any sign of leakage and was told she'll be right they don't leak.
Cheers
Mike
Well after ordering a genuine L/R rear main seal there is no difference between the Bearmach UK and the genuine L/R seal its made in India except the price ones $40 the others $65 they are identical and both look crappy compared to the one i removed from my engine i have attached some pics of them side by side the LH is original (note the locating dowels look better casting) the RH is genuine L/R
looking at the flutes the rear is original 280000ks the front genuine L/R new
Well after installing the new genuine L/R rear main seal it now leaks after feeding a snake cam up in side the bell it is leaking from the contact of seal and crank i knew the seal looked crappy compared to the original so i have just pulled the auto flywheel sump and seal out and refitted the original 2003 280000 k seal back in and i am in the process of reassembling it will update how it works out.
