Probably makes sense to set up max boost with the gauge and do away with it.

No! i do not suggest that it's not required.....

I understand it's there to prevent waste gate creep. When i installed the boost gauge years ago i installed the "T" for the gauge take off between the intercooler pipe and the boost modulator. Space is tight down there and the signal pipe developed a kink below the "T" so i ignorantly purchased "vacuum" pipe to replace the troublesome piece and with the extra length incorporated a strain relief loop to avoid the kink - problem fixed! But only for 18 months or so because over time what i think was condensed PCV oil vapor was pooling in the loop causing the rubber to soften, balloon and then rupture under pressure whilst negotiating the final climb out of the Toolangi Forest on approach to the the Kinglake turn off Got boost back by re-arranging the hoses but in the process had to bypass the boost modulator and found waste gate creep if it ever was a problem didn't seem to be an issue when pushing 18 psi. I eventually replaced the remaining dodgy vacuum hose with more robust fuel hose and left the boost modulator isolated. My thoughts were that they're known to fail and I'd already had one go, so it's still isolated and no apparent effects on performance.

PS: I understand that DEFENDER TD5's don't have boost modulators but I maybe wrong.....

    I agree.
Plenty of insight into the workings of the TD5 and the whole tuning/performance process.
Not to mention insight into the characters on AULRO
