Chip and remap are two different things. There is more scope to tune to your priorities with a remap. I've found I get more performance and equal economy before and after. The two are not directly related as you may think.

That is the bit I find puzzling, unless you drive at quite a bit more slowly with the camper than you do without it. I would have expected the weight, the drag and the wind resistance to have some effect.

Have you done some basic checks eg oil in the loom, MAF etc?

Fuel usage does seem a little high.

With 245 75 16's, roof bars, oztent and loaded with camping gear I get 11.5 l/100 km on the highway. That's with a mild remap and 3" exhaust with no cat.
    Cheers

Yep, definitely run a little slower with the camper on more in an effort to avoid flogging the car than to save fuel. Still that’s perhaps only 10km/h or so slower and I’ll generally sit back up on the limit in open flat country. Probably take it easier on the way out too as on the return journey the camper is 200kg or so lighter due to an empty water tank, less food and no beer. The camper itself is soft floor and pretty low profile so hides reasonably behind the car and also had a negligible effect while being towed behind the V8.

Air flow meter should be fine but is it worth giving it a clean with contact cleaner regardless? As far as the injector loom goes what specifically would I be looking for? I’ve also had someone recommend getting the injector pump checked for over fuelling but it’s not billowing smoke asside from which he drives a Patrol and knows little about the TD5.

    Cheers Andrew.

I recently headed over to Googs track, total of 2300km, averaged 12.8L/100, which I thought was excellent, considering how cut up the track was.

Always runs fully loaded, has a full roof rack and enough crap for 2 weeks (Wife Packed).

Don't often get out without the camper usually averages low 14 with that on, which is still pretty good.

    [QUOTE=AJD3671;2245348]
Hi Everyone, first time poster, long time reader.

I recently purchased an 02 TD5 Auto Disco Ex Brisbane after owning 4 V8Auto's over the past 10 years. I drove it back to Sydney in stock factory trimon highway tires using a little over 9lt/100km. After getting back to Sydney Imoved most of the modifications over from my last V8 to the TD5. CDL, 2"lift,32 MTR's, full length roof rack and awning, ARB winch bar and a dualbattery set up. Clearly I assumed this would have a detrimental effect on fueleconomy but it has blown out to near 16lt/100km with or without my 1200kgcamper on back.

So my questions are what fuel consumption should I be seeing ? What ifanything could have gone wrong or should I be looking at to explain such a bigjump ? What can I change that will bring consumption down to a more acceptablelevel ?

12L/100km I could live with. So I'm hoping someone has a similar set up to provide some guidance but any help suggestions etc... will be most welcome.

My set-up and vehicle is nearly identical and I get the same as you. BUT it does not seem to be the norm so am always trying different things. I do have a remap now also, this may have improved it ever so slightly, but power was worth it. Standard ecu with roof racks removed made little difference. I am still confident that something is not quite right. Might check the MAF today by swapping in an old one.

Digging up and old thread on fuel economy.

Chaffy is consuming way too much diesel. Averaging around 17-17.5 per hundred. Up here in the NT on the highway.

i also get basically the same around town.

most of my driving is now highway work travelling at the NT SPEED LIMIT. 130km/h on the cruise control when he will maintain that. Probably averages around 120/125 for most of the trip.

when I bought him he was getting around. 13 per hundred. Would get close to 1000km out of a tank. Now Iam lucky to get 850.

External Vehicle mod are the same, no change apart from mud tyres instead of all terrains. Vehicle was already getting this crappy economy before the highway work started Jan last year.

changes to Chaffy since I have owned him.

Low km replacement second hand motor fitted from trs in Adelaide approx four years ago as Chaffys original was dusted resulting in a hole in a piston. Was like that when I bought him and ran it for two years before changing out.

interestingly it was after the motor was replaced that I began to see the difference in economy. Would different motors really have such an effect?.

recently had a new HD gearbox and transfer fitted from Ashcroft's
replaced injector loom as wel and had the rest of the loom cleaned out to get rid of excess oil.

Chaffy is a bit of a porker so higher usage is expected but .would expect usage around 13l/100.

MODS: (all fitted when I bought him)

    ARB BULL BAR,
    FRONT SKID PLATE
    RECOVERY POINTS
    DUAL BATTERY
    SAFARI SNORKEL
    DP CHIP
COMBINED LIFT OF AROUND 4inches (( closer to 2.5 3) now from sag after parking next to a Disco that had a brand new LRA 4 inch drop kit fitted with standard tyres, roof line was higher than mine)
    265/75 tyres
steel rear bar with swing way Gerry can holder and tyre holder. (4x4 intelligence brand I thin it is) bar looks factory.
    155 l LONG RANGE TANK
    STEEL SIDE STEPS
full length stepped roof rack with tubes and awning fitted.

    Now Chaffy is serviced regularly.

    no faults showing on Nanacom.

MAF has been checked and cleaned.
    is
air thingy ( can't remember the name off hand) in the intake manifold was replaced as it was faulty earlier this year.

Slowing down to 110 does not appear to make a difference to economy?

I am going to check the setting in the MAF again with the NANACOM and have a replacement I can install. Will do that after next trip to measure any difference.

Now Chaffy is working hard at 125-130km (real sped not odo sitting on 115-120 on Doo) basically he is maxed out with very little left in the tank. I always thought that Disco's would easily push to 160 with no problems.

Apart from slowing down which doesn't seem to make a difference or removing the roof rack etc (which I don't want to do as he used to get 13 with it fitted and I am happy with that) what else could I look at to see why he is drinking so much.

    cheers Chris

Add 10% to your odo reading when working out your fuel consumption ( bigger tyres ) , mud tyres will also use more fuel , 130 kph will use a heap more than 110, especially on a lifted 4x4 with roof rack etc , has the new motor been swapped like for like ? , eg 10p for 10 p or 16p for same ? ( lots of hardware and software differences) I'd suggest selling your dp chip and getting a proper remap as well as a decent intercooler, cheap snorkels also don't help fuel consumption. Do you have an egt gauge?
