2001 D2 TD5 Block filling with diesel fuel!

Gday all. I need some advice please: 2001, D2 TD5:
The car starts and runs very well, though only till the block fills with diesel. The car first broke down 3 weeks ago. Took it to "Maddils" in Gympie. They said they fixed the problem. Apparently it was injector seals and washers. The bill was paid, then last week (2 weeks after "repairs"), the very same thing happened, though followed by some bad sounding noises from under the bonnet. Now, they are saying it needs a new engine! What the hell did they do to it? The car is owned by my "elderly" female neighbour. Its a brilliant car except for this bloody fuel problem. Any ideas? Or does she have to fork out for a new donk? Cheers in advance. Brett

I'm not sure what you mean by block filling with diesel but I'm guessing that you mean the fuel was/is leaking past the injector seals. However it it not unheard of for the fuel gallery to be cracked or the head porous and mis diagnosed as injector seals.
More investigation is needed and the head off and checked.

    Brett,
Mine is a 2004 D2a TD5 160,000kms. I've just been through a similar issue with mine. It can be the injector o rings and seals that can leak diesel into the oil/sump or it can be a cracked/porous head as it was with mine. The o ring/copper washer fix is the first step in trying to solve the problem. The next is to take the head off and test it for cracks. You could have the oil tested maybe prior to this but if you can smell diesel in the oil, and the oil was changed when the o rings and injector washers were done and it smells like diesel, it sounds like the head. I put a thread on here recently about my issues, I fixed it as cheaply as I could without doing the labour myself.
    regards
    David

Unless the "elderly" neighbour is a mechanic, who regularly goes off road, with 10K stashed under the mattress, she may be well advised to get rid of it.

A new head alone will cost almost the D2's value, then there are the multitude of other problems coming for a d2 at this age (ask me how I know.)

I'm not suggesting she graduate to a Gopher just yet, but the short-term pain of D2 separation will be preferable to the long-term financial burden in her senior years.

Gday Nino. Apparently my neighbour was told by the mechanic that the fuel was filling up the sump and blending with the oil. I know bugger all about diesels as im a v8 type of fella. Lol. If something like this can be "mis-diagnosed", then it sounds like "hit and miss" and costing a mongrel fortune and still not getting to the real problem. I think ill just advise her to get rid of it. Cheers for your time and input.

Gday David. "Smell" the diesel, there is that much in the sump, it raises the level!. Lol. Anyway cobber, im gonna advise her to ditch it. She cant afford the $6k plus to have a new unit fitted. And id advise against it, now being informed of "porous" heads. Thanks for ur time cobber. Brett

    Brett,
Yes making oil is what happens. It is a common TD5 problem unfortunately and I believe is caused by poor castings at Landrover. Your mechanic hasn't misdiagnosed anything, he's done the cheapest fix known ie a couple of hundred dollars to try and fix the problem ie 1st step. Having said that I found out about my little issue 5 years ago and have been running the gauntlet for 60,000kms with diesel in my oil, due to ill health mainly. If you don't fix it, you can run the risk of a diesel motor running on and revving itself to death or till it explodes I believe. Anyway not something you'd want to wish on an elderly neighbor that's for sure. Its not good, lets leave it at that.

I can confirm that if a new head is required, which is the case if the injector washers and O rings have already been tried, that around $5.5k will be the outlay That is inclusive of labour etc.
