    Hand brake problem

Hi all I have a problem with the hand brake in my 02disco I pulled the hand brake on and the cable became tight but then seemed to let go. Now I have no hand brake at all and there is a noise as I drive the car my question is can I break the hand brake cable and is this common. Also if it is the hand brake cable how hard is it to replace and how much are they and cac I still drive the car thanks all.

To replace the cable you will need to remove centre console for the top of the cable.

For the other end you will need to remove the handbrake shoes. This will require the rear tailshaft to be removed to get the brake drum of.

It will be ok to drive so long as the cable hasn't jammed with the handbrake partly on.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

this might be a really silly idea, but would it be possible to repair the cable by welding it together or something? might be a bit easier.

No. It is a stranded steel cable, and welding will spoil the heat treatment - plus you would need to remove the cable to weld it anyway, so it would be a bigger job, even if it could be done.

"there is a noise as I drive the car" this is a good reason to not drive until you have the brake drum off and investigate the problem.
