I've got the TD5 black smoke / no power blues !!

    Hey everyone,
Newbie here. Have made my introductions already so won't repeat that.
    I recently bought a td5 1999/2000 model @350,000 kms.
Was going really well, no smoke, smooth, power etc. stupidly I decided to overtake the caravan that had trapped me for the last 10kms or so. Slipped from 4th to 3rd, accelerated/ revs up to 4000, passed, back into 4th/ revs down to 3000 but big plume of black smoke behind me.
No bang. Nothing but thick black smoke.
Caravan driver was probably laughing his head off!
Anyway after that the smoke stopped and I was able to cruise as I had been at 100kms/hr. No probs.
About a week later the wife takes the car into town and it loses all power and chucks massive amounts of thick black smoke out of the back.
I took it to a garage where they said they'd looked at it and it's the turbo, definately. I can't afford to replace things if it's not going to fix it just on a guess.
I took it to someone else who slipped the out pipe off the turbo and revved the engine, plenty of air came out so he deems the turbo OK.
Have looked online and seen the list of possible culprits and now have the car back at our house and will try to fix myself !!
While driving back to ours the car would go fine for @2kms if I drove it v.v gently and then it would do the smoke/no power thing.
What I found was if I pulled the electrical block connector off the corner of the cylinder head it would be full of oil. I would spray it with electrical contact cleaner, soak up the oil from the opposite part of the connector, wait for it to dry and replace it. I'd drive fine for the next 2kms until it happened again and I'd repeat what I'd just done.
Do you think that this is the problem?
Is this the wiring loom that you read about, the one that goes back to the computer from the injectors and oils up?
If so is it an easy(ish) fix for someone with limited mechanical skills?
Would it be wise to buy a new air flow/ mix doodad at the same time incase that is part of the problem, indeed should I replace the hoses with fancy silicone jobs as well. If so then that's still a hell of a lot less than buying a turbo?
Look forward to your collective thoughts.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers
    Creekman.

Have done a search on this site? Lots of info that will match your symptoms. Clean sensors (MAP, IAP etc), connectors, check hoses(intercooler, boost modulator etc), intercooler for oil. On the full site there are two search options. One provided by the forum software, the other is down the bottom.

If the harness from the head is full of oil, then that is the first place to start.Renew it is the best policy Land Rover Discovery 2 Defender TD5 Injector Loom O E AMR6103 NOT Chinese Copy | eBay and then clean out the red plug into the ECU[located on rear of battery box]allow the plug to drain for as long as possible.Until both plugs are free of oil you are pushing the proverbial..then move onto checking for delaminated hoses......

With the thick black smoke occurring so suddenly then being OK I suggest that you inspect the intercooler hose between the turbo and the I/C for delamination from the inside, specifically the hose at the I/C (top left side of engine bay). This particular hose is prone to delaminating whereby a flap of inner hose temporarily blocks the airflow then resumes its normal position as soon as the engine stops. Blown turbo seals would cause blue smoke whereas improperly burnt diesel produces black smoke.

I agree with the eddy and Graeme. I've replaced my inter cooler hoses with:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rove...item3f3bfd5fce

They are not just silicon lined, the are made from silicon. People speculated they were only silicon lined because of the price, and I cannot blame them, but i have bought them and they are fine.

I have also fitted this exact loom eddy posted:

from "Roverlord" it is better constructed than the factory one I removed. Also as you are new to the forum and I assume Land Rover spare parts, Roverlord are great, they only sell quality parts and are almost always cheaper than any competitor.

I would say these two items, much cheaper than a turbo, will fix your problem. Both can be installed by anyone, definitely not a mechanic only job. I understand not affording to guess and throw money around, I'd bet the problem is your injector loom and even if it isn't, you need one anyway from what you've described.

    Thanks Eddie, Graeme & Jazzman,
It's reassuring to feel I'm on the right track and that I may be able to fix it myself.
Thank you for the links. I will follow them up. Having the confidence to try these things is half the battle I think, and you have just increased my confidence.
I will post pics as I go of me pulling my hair out, no doubt !!
    Cheers for now.

I tried the most simple things first. Bought a silicon hose kit and replaced the hoses from the turbo, the 2 small ones on either end of the metal tube.
The first from the turbo was fine but replaced anyway. The 2nd one was completely cactus! From the outside it looked and felt OK but when removed you can see the inner skin has come away from the outer at both ends which must have effectively been like a balloon in a drainpipe.
Having found that and replaced it I took it for a drive and it's been magic.
    No problems at all.
I did buy an injector loom but see no need to replace it at the moment as there is no oil at the red connector end of the computer. So I have a spare if I need one.
I also still have the biggest of the new silicone hoses which goes to the intercooler I think, but was too cramped to replace in the time I had available.
So I'd just like to say thanks for the advice, it saved me from buying a new turbo and dealing with mechanics who 'allege' to know what they are talking about at your expense.
So 'thanks' and have a Happy Christmas.

Well done, though if you want to be completely covered and as you already have the injector loom unplug and inspect the injector plug at the front of the head and if you see oil there better replace the injector loom asap cos it means it's already leaking just that the oil didnt reach the ECM red plug yet...then you'll feel even more improvement in how the engine is running
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
