Howdy fello landrovians, i had my td5 d2 tuned a couple of weeks ago, but now under semi hard acceleration it blows a nice cloud of black smoke. has my vehicle been tuned/chipped incorrectly or are my injectors likely to be needing replacing? I know black smoke is caused by over fueling. Car is running amazing otherwise. It is due for a service too.
Also with the chip/ecu upgrade tune thing is it safe to disconnect thr battery at all?

Hi,
Do you know what sort of chip you had fitted? If you had a piggy back type tuning chip it basically fools the ECU into upping the fuel rate across the whole Rev range thus causing black smoke on acceleration and at other times.
If you had an ECU remap you will still get some black smoke under certain conditions but in my experience it is much less. Again, if it's a remap say from BAS you may be able to fine tune it. Contact the workshop and ask what your options are.
Cheers
Nino
As said, some fine tuning is possible as long as it's NNN ECU and it's remapped via OBD port, if it's MSB ECU only other chip with different map would make a difference, mine is with MSB ECU and had that black smoke after the tuning, what i found was an old unworking depression control valve and the adjusters on the rocker shaft were too tight(i think they were so since i've bought it)... new valve and the adjustments fixed as in the book and almost no smoke now... only what's normal in these cases e.g. if i floor it like mad uphill with the trailer attached.
Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
The first remap on my D2a resulted in copious amounts of black smoke under even light throttle. All OK after an adjustment to the map.

Reading between the lines, and threads, you have probably got the ecu change-over from the well known Landrover wrecker south of Adelaide? His tune is notoriously smoky/fuelly at certain revs. So much so that exhaust-gas temperatures can get alarmingly (damagingly) high if driven hard and you are unaware of the extra head generated. It wont show on the temperature guage. Towing in hilly country can cause the high egt that trashes manifolds, turbos, ask me how I know...
Once tuned, I found it hard not to use the extra power, and TRS may not have warned you about the heat issue. Its why a lot of people on this forum, myself included have fitted egt guages. I dont think TRS can fine tune their chip, its a one-size-fits-all type of thing.
Td5 injectors seem pretty reliable if filter is kept serviced (my original injectors now have 380k km on them). Intercooler hose delamination is more common but will usually be accompanied by reduced power at the same time as the heavy smoke, which clears if you throttle back. The extra heat, I suspect, also ages the oil faster, shortening its service life. The chip is hard-wired in the ecu box, a flat or removed battery will not interfere with it.

TRS, I asked them to trick my computer but they said it was already done, that was good, but how can I find out what where was it done and by whom?
Mine also has gas fitted, not much use if the engine is already fueled to the max.
I note that when running on diesel only, I get better economy than when using gas as well, however the overall cost is slightly less on gas. I now, (Thanks Be Utey), know that gas can only use any oxygen not used by the diesel, with bulk diesel being injected gas is virtually useless, I'll try get the gas flow down so low that it will help, wish me luck.
Cheers
Mike

What is an egt guage? It was there yes. What should i do if its the chip and it's going to harm my engine? It's not heaps of smoke but rather it have none. The engine is running more efficient and seems to not work hard at all compared to before lol.
