    Horns stopped working

    Hi All,

Hoping you can help diagnose my problem.

My horns on my 01 D2 have stopped working.

They were gradually getting quieter and then just stopped. All fuses appear to be working. Where should I look next?

    Cheers, Chris

    Hi,

If it was me I'd be looking for a bad earth. A place to start.

Check the horn relay in the main fuse&relay box under the bonnet. Swap the horn relay with one of the others of the same type (small relay - black with green stripe)

If they were getting quieter then stopped, I would be looking for horns with water in them or corrosion.

Been doing the Ad thing on a beach, by driving in the salt water artistically spraying salt everywhere?

Sometimes they can be rejuvenated by adjusting the frequency screw on the side of the horn.

I had my RRC horns die on me and bought Hella ones which were much louder.
In any case electrical troubleshooting REQUIRES that you start at the component then work back. Put a multimeter across the input wires and see if it shows power when SWMBO presses the horn button between grumbles.

Knowing the D2 horns, I'd bet each of the elements have progressively died.

    In a quiet place

    • Pop bonnet
    • Wind drivers window down
    • Standing outside the vehicle with engine off; Press horn button and listen for a slight click from fuse box region under bonnet
    • If you hear a click they horns are dead.

Happened to the D2 that Junior now owns - 2 Hella units bolted in and all good to go.

    Went with these...

Just need to swap the plug for a couple of spade connectors (or make up a patch loom if you're so inclined) they bolt straight in place of the old ones..
