    Arrow Steering box leak?

I looked under the vehicle the yesterday and noticed that the lever drop arm on the underside of the steering box was covered in oil/fluid - but the steering box itself looks dry still:

The steering fluid wasn't low, but the vehicle was warm as it had been driven for a few hours prior.

MicroCat doesn't show any seals listed for there - I assume likely a replacement box is in my near future...

    leaking pump

try acap full of brake fluid in the power steering resovoir it will swell the rubber seals in the steering box worked on mine and that was 3 years 50000 kms ago cheaper than new box

With a bit of gymnastic you can fit the kit in situ, remove drop arm then circlip then start engine move steering wheel and washer and seal will be pushed out, above blue seal main seal goes in first then steel washer the circlip then black dirt seal, they can leak a little when turning with vehicle stood in some conditions as sector shaft will flex, you can see the layout here too Allbrit.de - Ersatzteile f?r LAND ROVER & MG ROVER (i dunno how you missed that)
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

Mine did a similar thing about 10,000kms ago. It was the easiest leak to spot as it had always been dry in that area. Corrosion had compromised the "hold the good stuff in" properties of the seal. Corrosion issues galore at the moment. Grrr.

I couldn't afford the vehicle to be off the road as long as it was going to take me to chance it would be fixed by fitting the above kit. And then not have ready access to a new/recon box if the kit failed to fix the issue. It was *easier* to fit a replacement box.

Trap for the young and unwise: avoid placing any body parts in the drop zone of the box whilst removing it...it would do serious damage to you.

Lifting the new box in was an exercise in creativity with a trolley jack and blocks of wood, etc. I briefly entertained the idea of lowering it down from above the engine bay but elected not to in the end.

Best of luck with getting yours sorted.

A good idea for a quick fix, but it would concern me regarding potential damage that it could do to seals in the pump or box assembly that are not leaking.

I'm going to order the QFW100180 seal kit as it's very well priced and hopefully the proper fix. The leak is very minor at the moment, so I'm happy to continue using the vehicle and monitoring the fluid level.
