    2000 d2 td5 rust in coolant tank

    Morning everyone.

Looking at retiring the v8 and move to a td5. Looking at one the other day. It looks ok. A few things to do for a roadworthy. One thing that caught my eye was dirty/ rust water in the coolant tank. So the system must have water instead of coolant. Do I look at this as a bad sign or does it just need a good flush and replace with coolant.

Anyone have experience with this? Thanks in advance.

I would walk away from any car with rust in the cooling system as it implies overall neglect. Is it really too much for someone to pay maybe $120 to have the coolant changed? To DIY it costs about $50 and an hour or so ( well several and $300replacing hoses,)which is the next question.

Are you sure it is rust or does it just look like rust? The coolant should be pink, I think I've seen stuff in tanks before that looks like rust that is actually sludgy stuff.

Isn't the TD5 alloy? Where would rust come from. I just think it is worth checking before writing it off.

You should probably search for things to look for when buying a td5. There are a few things like, exhaust studs and fuel pressure regulator leaks for example.

In regards to the aircon. Check to make sure the front of it is still attached. The clutch can fall off, it only has one about 10mm bolt holding it on in the centre. You will have to remove the plastic cover on the radiator to check. Also a td5 issue. It could be something simple as blown fuse or out of gas too, if it is low on gas it wont engage the clutch so you want hear it do anything.

    Thanks so far.

I guess rust is the wrong word. It's brown sludgey water that should be green or pink or whatever colour a td5 has. I'm one hand it says to me opportunity to pick it up for a good price. On the other potential major problem. I suspect it just hasn't been treated right. But I'm hoping if this has ever been an issue before that leads to a big issue someone will speak up.

Could be from corrosion or could be stop leak. Either way not a good sign of engine condition.

As Jazzman eluded to, it could be a slurry caused by oil entering the cooling system through a corroded oil cooler. Best avoid it.

Alarm bells would be ringing for me. Does the vehicle have a documented service history? If not, best to keep looking, I suggest. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

    Not sure

A well known LR mechanic once said to me that if u dont keep up the coolant in the Td5 motor, the oil cooler can corrode sooner, which may need replacing as well. Depends how long the water coolant has been like that.
