it is easy enough to just unbolt the egr.....and while you're at it blank it off.
I used a piece of broomhandle wrapped in old rags and dampened with white spirits and just cleaned it that way.
dont forget to unplug the sensor and clean it too.
My recently purchased 2001 td5 is the first diesel I have owned,so I'm on a steep learning curve.
Before I charge into this next maintenance job I have a couple of questions to ask the font of knowledge here.
There appears to be only 4 glow plugs. Do they simply disconnect like petrol spark plugs, just pull the lead from the plug?
There are a couple of stud/bolts that are difficult to get a socket to connect. On the lower intake manifold stud on cylinder 5' do I need to first remove the FPR an if so is there any fuel under pressure that will be released when the unit is unbolted?
I haven't found this kind of detail in the nets tutorials, just says to unbolt the unit and not much more. Are there any 'how to' tricks I should know.
I hope to clean this gunk this week while I still have the energy. Having seen the gunk in the intake tract, it'll bug me until it's all nice and clean again. I think gunk must have some negative affect on performance with all this build up
acting as an unwanted insulation of intake air.
Thanks for any tips.
Brian

Undo fuel cooler which will allow easier access to manifold bolts
use 3/8"drive with universal joint and extension or 1/4" drive if its easier , blank off egr while you're at it , fuel hoses should come off easily don't worry about pressure as long as ignition is offas mentioned clean map sensor
if you get really keen you could clean intercooler
Cheers
Brian, check out the " shop " section at the top of the page. A must have is the RAVE dvd, IMO, it may not answer every question, but it is certainly informative, Bob

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
Thanks for the replys. Thanks Bob 10 for pointing out Rave. I had seen references to Rave but it didn't click with me as to exactly what it was/is.
Well yes, I am a bit slow at times, ...... I blame Father Time!
Tip suggested to me was that once you've got the manifold off, get a cheap dunny brush, chop off the handle so you've just got the brush on the 'stalk' and use it like a drill bit to get inside the manifold after you've soaked it in degreaser.
A pressure washer works well, but you will make a mess.
Cheers
Sent using two tin cans and a piece of string.
