Ok so I just pulled he key a part and found that the battery has corroded inside and there is some rust in their. Will clean up with contact cleaner and install new battery hopefully that solves the problem.
Hi guys,
Yesterday my remote key stopped working and I had to lock the car manually the old fashioned way with the key in the door lock.
This morning I unlocked the car manually. Only the drivers side door would unlock and then the alarm went off. As the key isn't working, I suspect a dead key battery, the only way I could get the alarm to stop was to disconnect the battery.
That is where I am at. does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix or at least get into the car and drive it. I forgot to mention the car wouldn't start as the alarm was going off.
Also I should mention I have 2 keys. One is 2 years old and is the key I use to unlock the car remotely this is the one that has died. The other key is just a shell and is the original key the car came with .. This key is smoother in the locks and ignition so this is the key I use to start the car with. The newer key that has died is very sticky and doesn't turn in the ignition smoothly. Having said all that I didn't try to start the car with the new key only the old one. Maybe there is a problem there.
Any ideas??
Thanks
Shaun.

Hi, the fob has a little red led on it which must glow when you push lock or unlock button... if it does and the car doesnt unlock the most common thing is dead roof receiver so you have to replace that to rule it out, it's plug and play, if the led doesnt come on it means the fob is dead... if no joy with the remote unlocking the only way to remobilise it is with EKA code (it's described in the owner's handbook, if you dont know the EKA a main dealer will give it to you. After you've remobilised it if you can't fix the remote unlocking you'll get it immobilised each time you use the key in the lock so better find somebody with tester and change the alarm factory setting, info here: Recommendation for D2 owners , be aware that any tester is useless as long as it's immobilised, good luck

Thanks for the info
I replaced the battery this arvo and the red button flashes brightly now when I push the lock or unlock button. When I reattached the battery the alarm kept going off and I couldn't stop the alarm with the key.
I only had 5 minutes to try before I had to go to work so I will try your suggestions in the morning.
Thanks
When you get it sorted, if you don't know your EKA code a Nanocom can read it.
If you don't have one, there are plenty of members here who do and are usually more than happy to help.

Unfortunately when you can read the EKA with tester you dont need it too much cos it means the car is not immobilised to need the EKA... the problem here is that the remote doesnt work and on factory alarm setting you can't disable the immobiliser with key only with fob or EKA...and as long as it's immobilised no tester will comunicate with the BCU

I am aware of this. My post was meant for when he gets it going, if he needs EKA code. I have now edited my last post to read as such.

So I replaced the battery in my key and the red light was shinning bright when I pressed either button. The next morning the key was dead again like the battery was dead. I did this again with another new battery and the same thing happened.
Does this mean I need a new FOB?
If so, what is the process of getting a new fob? Do I need to tow the car to a mechanic that can program a new key?
Bad time of year for this to happen all the land rover places are closed for holidays and no one can give me the EKA code. Hopefully someone will be available tomorrow.
I will definitely be setting it to disarm with key when it gets sorted.
It seems that the fob has some short in it, first you'll have to remobilise it with EKA code, be aware that if you lock it without set it to disarm with key you'll need EKA again to get it started(meanwhile pray that the previous owner haven't set it's own EKA cos then you are in real trouble as you'll need to replace the BCU too), then you'll have to source a replacement fob and find somebody with proper tester to programm the fob and eventually set it to disarm with key(not necessarily in this order)... i dont think a main dealer will programm you a used fob only new one, for used key you must find somebody with nanocom to do it for you. Good luck

Thanks sierrafery for all the info.
I have another update to throw in there which may confuse things a little.
After reading various forums i went through the following steps and managed to get the car started.
I put a new battery in my key,
reconnected the battery in the car - at this point the alarm sounded,
then I closed the driver's side door and locked it with the key - at this point the alarm went off,
I then opened all doors with the remote key and started the car fine.
I went around the block and back and then tested the key a few times all worked fine. The key does seem to have a weak signal I can only get it to work when I am within 1 meter or so of the car.
I will see if the key has drained the new battery in the morning..
If I need a new fob where would I source one?
Thanks,
Shaun.
