Td5 w/ ACE: Disturbing intermittent sounds from the fanbelt areas

    Hi All,

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing a noticeably loud intermittent worn/gravelly bearing sound combined with less frequent not very loud whirring/whining sound similar to the sound of alternator interference heard over the radio?

    A few more clues:

    No burning smells

There is no belt slippage screech at any time (start-up, driving or shut-down)

There is no unusual movement in the fan - feels very solid

There doesn't feel like any unusual movement on any of the pulleys, all feel solid, although I haven't taken of the serpentine belt to test the individual pulleys (don't know how too!)

When watching the belt when running there doesn't seem to be any unusual movement

The pretensioner has about 4-5mm travel (in the expected directions) when running and is constantly moving as the motor idles

No rattles at any time (start-up, driving or shut-down)

    Should I be worried??

Take the belt off, easy to do, just put a breaker bar and socket on the tensioner pulley bolt and lever it in the direction to take the tension off. Then test each pulley without the belt load on it. You want to make sure the pulleys are ok before more extensive damaged is caused.
Also check the harmonic balancer, they are known to let go if that happens and they damaged other expensive items.

does give a kind of rattle or clunk when you shut down?

If so I would suspect the harmonic balancer......it starts making noises well before you can see anything happening.

as Roverlord said , remove your serpentine belt, and check all pulleys, get a decent bar or screwdriver behind the harmonic balancer.....it should not flex very much.....if it does theres your problem.

I have replaced two at about 150k intervals.

the serpentine belt itself also gets quite noisy when its had enough.....easy fix.

most everything on these cars talks to you in some form when maintenance is required

Is the noise when stationary or driving? , auto or manual ? If you want to remove belt , undo 4 Phillips head screws from upper radiator shroud and remove , put socket and bar ( 15 mm from memory) on tensioner and turn to loosen , remove belt (there should be a diagram)
if not draw the pulley and belt diagram on a piece of paper before removal. Spin pulleys and feel for harshness,

    The car is an auto

The noisy bearing sound present when idling and driving.

The other sound I have only heard while driving.

The air cond bearing can do this. Try switching to econo mode and see if it stops.
