When you say your leak was so bad it leaked down the handbrake cable into the handbrake drum, do you think it might have been possible the oil leaked through the fibro washer on the output shaft and filled up the brake drum?
The most common leak we found when oil drips into the Hand Brake drum is from the rear out put shaft. It leaks past the oil seal and past the white felt washer. The felt washer is a crush washer, it compacts when the retaining nut is done up. Over time they do perish and cause leaks.
I use a small bead of RTV behind the felt washer on fitting and do it up. The RTV then will squeeze up into the out put shaft contact and seal it better.
    Cheers,
    Mario

No, in my case there was no oil above the level of the cable hole. The backing plate was quite dry above there, and between the cable hole and the output housing..

In any case seeing I had it apart I renewed the seal and it made no difference to the amount leaked. AFAIR I also put some silastic on the splines.

Mine was so bad , it dripped onto the handbrake cable, then into the drum and wet my handbrake shoes.

He wants $2000 to just fix the leak?????

TRS serviced my Disco just after I bought it at 230,000 km and it came back with a report of leaking TC...

Phil quoted $1200 to re-seal and re-shim the TC. Pretty much the usual job for age. Happy to say money well spent as no more leaks and goes well.

So I'd say $2000 is a bit much...

    I am really confused.

Photo 1 AFAIK is a shot of the oil drain in the bellhousing which carries away oil leaking from the rear main seal of the engine.

Photo 2 ,3 and 4 are shots of the front of the transfer case, and the drain (slot) for leaks from the intermediate shaft which is under the bracket.

It doesn't look to be leaking very badly from the intermediate shaft as the crossmember is not soaked and the bolts on the Transfer case base plate are not dripping, just a bit dirty.

IMHO, neither leak justifies spending big money on. My leak coated the crossmember , rear axle and teh front my camper trailer in oil, but the transfer oil level only went down about 10MM in 17,000Km.

So which is it leaking from : The bellhousing or the transfer case?
    Regards Philip A

Definitely need to get a copy of the RAVE CD as this includes the workshop manual that will show you how to check and top up oil levels.

The t/box refill is a 1/2inch square drive plug on the back of the box right next to the handbrake drum. Looks like the drain plug in your pictures. Bit of a pain to get to, best to have the hand brake released so you can move the cable aside. I have a 1/2inch extension drive which has a slightly bent shaft which just clears the handbrake drum.

Once open, best to use a Tom Thumb hand held oil pump. If it does not take much to top up then this is pretty normal. You fill until it overflows from the refill plug.

When changing oil I always open the refill plug first to make sure I can get open. If you do drain, you should always find the t/box oil looks as good coming out as it did going in even after 40,000 kms.

    P.s. Unless there is oil pooling on the drive way or coating the back door window, I don't see anything that would concern me in your pictures. After 10 years all LR products come with the corrosion inhibitor function.... (-;

To check the level, you open the filler plug behind the handbrake cable, and stick your previously cleaned little finger in to the second joint and bend the first joint down until hopefully you feel a warm feeling of oil on the tip of your finger.
Hopefully you do not have fat fingers.
