Auto in 1st, low range, M activated, drive through the brakes for a second to get lock up or let it catch itself after a metre or two and it will inch down most things

First time HDC in anger for the BSL,,
around 3 minutes run time
no (real) substitute for a decent first gear ratio though
On the Bridle Track out of Melrose

Although having driven a few manuals down hills lately, it was nice to just leave it in 1H for some hills![]()

Manual d2 v8 low first is a crawl. The HDC is handy though if you get a sudden drop on one side for example mid descent and it kicks in for a second or 2.
Cheers
Agreed ozscott. I've used it on my auto V8 and now my manual V8 and manual gives that controllable crawl down low which all but makes HDC not really necessary.

I have a TD5 auto D2a. I've noticed the lock up in low range is great, would be nice if it was slightly slower. However, i find the HDC too fast and on loose surfaces more of a hindrance.
When there is plenty of traction i'm sure it would work well, but for the tracks in the high country it doesn't seem to be much use to me. I end up using the lock up in 1st and applying the brakes when I feel like i'm gaining a little too much speed. Riding the brakes down a hill into a river crossing isn't my idea of a good time. I tend to stop at the bottom and let the brakes cool first anyway.
Try Sarah Spur on Mt. Sarah in the Vic High Country and tell me what you think of the gearing then
I hate to say it but the manual Toyota Landcruiser 75 series diesel went well. I reckon my old 1975 Series 3 4 speed manual diesel would have crawled down it too. But it was not quite as comfortable as the D2.
