4x4 Australia article on CRD problems incl TD5!

Well the, what is the word morons? have a special feature on CRD problems in the latest issue.
They include TD5s in the list of CRD engines.

At least they didn't show the TD5 as having any common CRD problems.

    I wonder why?

Could just be that TD5 is not a CRD engine. They say it has a Delphi system, when only the injectors are Delphi AFAIK.

    CRD Td5?

I thought it was a LUCAS developed fuel injection system.
I've just had mine out and I could have sworn they were marked LUCAS.
I've heard many people call it the first CRD. I think it's easy to to confuse a common fuel gallery as a CRD.
So what if the article got it wrong. Those that know, know! Generally a very reliable engine. As with any older motor, have to keep on top of servicing.

your right, it doesn't have belts, its only got the one.

you have no idea how frustrating it is trying to install a balance shaft, its bearings then timing it in properly and that's assuming you can get your hands on one.

I've still never managed to get the common rail-injector line union nuts to seat correctly.

as far as engine goes its probably about on par with a 4bd1-t no wonder ford discontinued it.

Despite all of this, they don't use much petrol.

    Question CRD

Hi Guys, am I missing something? ( I like to keep abreast even though I drive a tdi, ) A Td-5 is common rail diesel or not? My understanding is "CRD" is a generic term for diesels that used a common very high pressure "rail" , and the fuel injectors connected to it are "fired" electronically. can you explain ?,
Common fuel gallery ? cheers simmo
PS I think the TD-5 is fine engine
