    Replacing intermediate steering shaft

    Hey All,

I'm in need of some guidance with regard to replacing the intermediate steering shaft on my D2. It would appear that the uni joints are seized as everything else has been checked or replaced. The information on replacement I've read indicates that the steering wheel, air bag etc... all need to be removed. My question would be is this correct or is there enough movement in the shaft once the pinch bolts are removed to take it out without further dismantling of the car?

    Thanks in advance Andrew.

I think you should be able to undo torx head on the square section as well as pinch bolts , should enable enough room, remember to mark it all so everything lines up on reassembly
    Cheers

Just looking at the RAVE. It doesn't say to remove the steering wheel.

It does say to lock the steering in the straight ahead position on the steering box with a bolt and not to turn the steering wheel when the shaft is out cause you could damage the rotary coupler in the wheel.

    It just says to:

Remove the bolt securing intermediate shaft to steering column,
Remove bolt securing intermediate shaft to universal joint,
Remove bolt securing the universal joint to the steering box,
Intermediate shaft: slide the intermediate shaft upwards, release from the universal joint and remove intermediate shaft from the steering column,
Universal Joint: Slide the intermediate shaft upwards, release from the universal joint and remove universal joint from the steering box.

Fitting is pretty much the reversal. Tighten bolts to 25Nm.

    Smile

Looks as if I was looking at the wrong info regarding what needed to be removed.

I do now however have a further issue with the torx bolt. Despite using the correct size and good quality Kinchrome bit and having given it a squirt of WD40 prior to attempting removal it will not budge. The bit has now slipped and done some damage to the torx bolt so where to from here? Drill and use an easy out or heat it up and have another go. Any ideas will be most welcome.

If you are replacing it just cut it in half with a hacksaw, the two pieces will then slide off the spline, post pictures of you bleeding knuckles after you have hacksawed it though.

Its actually the replacement (2nd hand) that the torx bit is stuffed on. Wanted to make sure it was going to come apart for install before potentially dismembering the old one and removing.
