    D2 GEAR BOX

HELLO. I WIPED OFF MY TDI AND LOOKING AT BUYING TD5 TO REPLACE IT.
I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY THE AUTO GEARBOXES NEED REPLACING. NEARLY EVERY ONE I HAVE LOOKED AT HAD THEM REPLACED. IS IT LACK OF MAINTANANCE OR A COMMON FAULT.
I HAVE LOOKED AT THE POST ABOUT BUYING A TD5 AND IT TELLS YOU A FAIR BIT.
BUT I JUST WISH TO KNOW ABOUT THE GEARBOX.
    APPRECIATE ANY INFO
    THANK YOU

The boxs live life on the edge, in stock form functional but not gaudy Their lifespan is about 230-240000kms. Some seem to go longer and some die early, irrespective of how you treat them. It is just 1 of the things to be aware of, you can have a great gearbox rebuilt by the likes of Ashcroft and others that use upgraded bits.

I would bet it depends on how clogged or not clogged their ATF cooler is from mud.
    Cheers

Possibly, though mine had been a town car for most of its 230kms never towed, never missed a service, yet the box died big time. Blocked coolers will help along wth heavey towing/offroading though

    Interesting and timely.

I've just been told that the auto box in mine will need to be refurbished. 290k kms on the odo.

    I guess I can't avoid it.

What sort of costs are involved?

$2000-$3000 plus fitting. Depends on who does it and what parts are required. Exchange box around $3000 from ZF
