air in the cooling system?
Hi Gezza,
I have a TD5 Disco (automatic). I was worried for quite a while about a noise that might be the same as what you are hearing. Shortly after I first noticed it, I had a major engine problem, and I figured it might have been related to that failure.
Several times, I asked if people knew what the noise might be. I tried to describe it, but it took a while for someone to come up with the correct suggestion as to what it was. To me, it sounded like a "gurgling" noise.
It turned out to be the Traction Control operating when one wheel hit a bump, especially when I was turning one way or the other. Next time I heard it, I quickly looked at the instrument panel, and, sure enough, the amber Traction Contol light was on for a short time.
I suggest that you do this next time you hear the sound, and see if that indicator ("TC") is lit up on the upper LHS of your instrument panel.
If you don't see that when the noise occurs, then it is probably something else, and I will not have been of any help!
Cheers, AndrewMilne
As mentioned , air in cooling system ( heater matrix to be exact)
Try bleeding your cooling system
First of all make sure that the noise is coolant related cos it could be many other things.... let the coolant out and make a test in 1 minute without coolant in the system to see if it does it so or not.... then at least you'll know if it's from there or something else.... mine did something quie similar when the dmf failed and appeared like from the matrix area

i don't think its the tc as it does it all the time when I got her the heater core was disconnected so I re connected it and it worked fine until about a week ago when the noise started.all I seem to do is fix the old girl since igot her if I can solve this problem and find a way to fixthe caster I will happy !
Are you advising to run the engine at 2000 rpm for 1 minute with no coolantor have I misinterpreted . would think it might be better to either just clamp one of the heater hoses or disconnect heater temporarily for the test. Gezza , what's wrong with the caster?, are your carpets wet ?
my carpets are dry I think there must be a blockage in the heater as when its just ticking over there is no noise but if I rev it the noise starts as for the caster iv fitted a ome lift and she wanders all over the place iv had the aliment done and they said I need 2 degree casterbushes or drop boxes but I cant find any
its annoying because I work at ARB in Mandurah and we sell caster bushes for all the other cars exeped landrover and ARB started off with landrovers
you missinterpreted, i should have said max 1 minute and only few peaks of 200 to observe if the symptom persists or not...but your method is better... i've ran mine more without coolant and nothing happened, in 1 minute from cold start it doesnt even reach 70 degrees without any coolant
