    Transmission dead

Well it finally gave out drove down to Nowra to pick up a transfer case for disco as my one is flogged out in the housing the trans has been stuffing about and was looking at pulling the engine, trans out fixing leaks on engine etc.

My problem is I live in Brisbane and have a temp job in Sydney so now have to weigh up what to do get it sent to Brisbane where it can sit while I do the repairs every second weekend I have off or get it repaired down here and fitted by some one else but the cost would be around the $5500 by the time labour, new cooler etc fitted.

I can get a loan car for my use while down here so not urgent I was lucky the person I bought the case off was heading back to Sydney ( he is a member on here too).

The trans has lost all drive can hear a slight drop in revs when put in gear the torque converter is spinning have 272Ks on trans will the oil was black and had changed and flushed it about 6000 kms ago.

Was looking at getting a Ashcroft trans sent over from UK so deciding what to do hoping it is not to dear for transport costs was even looking at hiring a landcruiser and car trailer to take mine up and bring my mates car down.

    Beer time now I think

If you are looking at a cost effective repair rather than "going all out" then hunt round and get a secondhand auto, put it in, do a service.

D2 boxes dont fail enough to not look at this as a realistic repair option.

Ashcroft will cost $3500 to 4500 landed, that's my best guess until I get customs, gst figures etc. Thats for the whole deal, the low price would be just box.

A quick thing to check though is the spud shaft and input gear, maybe the splines have gone? I believe that is an easy and relatively cheap fix, take pto cover off, transfer gear out, pull shaft, new shaft, new gear and done.
    Worth a check anyway

Hi have been doing heaps of research on where to get bits Jpat seems the place and maybe Alto in the states, will begin stripping it in six weeks or so must tidy up garage first and clear the bench.

Will post pics if I find anything of interest which I suspect I will as engine did stall for no reason at idle and when restarted no drive in any gears that points maybe to the front of the box maybe oil pump.

Will start ordering parts for trans soon and have been ordering other parts before the failure as was going to pull the lot out and fix leaks on engine and transfer case plus look at doing the trans.

Have ordered all mounts, flexiplate, ( did water pump 40K ago) will replace crank angle sensor, any bearings on front of engine, replace trans cooler, have gotten a bigger sump for transfer case, replace those hard to get to coolant hoses, pull out engine oil cooler and check it over, do the front and rear engine seals, did order a new turbo before the tranny let go from TD5Alive hopefully that is sitting in Brisbane.

Is there anything else to look at while the whole thing is out am planning on keeping it for another 5 to 6 years.

I have a big drive next week hired a car trailer rated for 3200 kgs ( could not find one in Sydney ) taking a Honda CRV down then pick mine up and take it back to Brisbane with a sleep over at my second bed in Sydney before heading back.
