anyone tried dye chek on the liner ?
When I read your reply, I thought that it would get their back up.
I wouldn't hold up AULRO (or any other forum) as being experts. As I noted before, I have wondered if LPG was the cause of two instances of head gasket burn through I've had, once with a Venturi system and once with injected LPG. Of course, it may not and I do hope not.
Your head gasket appears to have suffered the same burn problem as mine near the bolt holes. See my pics in the P38A section.
When my car used to use water and pressurise the cooling system, testing never found any traces of exhaust gases.

I have a d1 that runs LPG and has a little under 300,000 klm most of which has been on LPG and has always run like a dream in LPG. That's great service right there. My LPG D2 did head gaskets at 200'000 BUT I had overheated it twice badly through my own fault. My d2 had LPG since 100,000 klm. The Rover v8 is the ideal engine for LPG. It is very popular in the UK as well. Pedro jump on the LPGUK forum and post up the pics and Turners explanation and see what the LPG fitters who frequent the forum recommend.
It's a bugger though because Turners are saying the block is OK so they don't seem interested in a replacement. Do you know any specialist engine rebuilders...guys that build up race motors for hill climb rovers would be ideal.
Cheers

you need a penetrant and a developer...
pretty sure it is what i used years ago when on the tools or is a similar product.
spray the pentrant, leave it a while wipe and then spray developer...
if you have a crack you will see it....

If it blows across the cylinders where does the coolant come from?

Maybe ... but why then doesn't the cylinder compression bleed off into the cooling system ? If water can pass one way from the water gallery, across the gasket and into the cylinder, compression gas should be able to pass the other way ... right ?

A properly constructed cooling system will allow a small amount of gas to bleed off via the pressure cap without losing any coolant. On a THOR engine it's the little black hose from the manifold to the radiator then the pressure tank that does that. A weak seal on a fire ring will allow small amounts of gas out and when the engine is switched off that same leak will allow a small amount of coolant into the cylinder. It happens because the radiator holds pressure from the coolant side for some hours after switch off.
You probably won't believe it, that's your right. However I have one of my old P76's that during its last year of service developed a short annoying miss every morning on start up. One morning I fired up the beast for a few seconds, shut it down then pulled out all the plugs. One (end) plug had a tell tale green drop hanging off it. So for the last few months of its service I'd shut it down and loosen the radiator cap after a short time to let the pressure bleed off. It always started smoothly after that. Coolant usage was tiny. I never did strip it down to change the head gasket as other plans intervened.
