Thumbs up AutoBox Fault is nonsense

    Hello AULRO,

Trying to diagnose a problem with my 2003 Auto TD5 D2.

When I check the faults for the autobox, initially the text flickers for a few seconds and then stops, and I'm left with this incomprehensible text:

It looks to me like the sort of text you can get with mismatched baud rates in a serial connection.

I'm wondering if anyone has seen something like this before, and knows what's causing it?

    Charles

    Hello,
No never seen this, but first i would check the earths on the gearbox then there is a loom that goes up over the gearbox in the tunnel so to speak, this is known to wear though and give very strange faults.

That sounds like a good place to start. I do remember seeing some exposed copper near the gearbox, or possibly the transfer case, last time I was underneath it.

    Thanks

Travels across the top of the Transfer Case & through a "Metal" P-Clip.

    Cheers

While on the hunt for poor earths...

Have a look at the negative strap on the battery, the first earth point just behind the battery is a stud with a 10mm nut, this often breaks or corrodes enough to cause a bad earth. Undo the nut (it will prolly break the stud off) clean the tab and move the strap upto the next post.

IMO it's a diagnostic protocol bug not earth issue, bad earth to ECU or diagnostic port would give a specific fault code or simply datalink failure, though everything is possible

The bad earth that I described is a oh so common D2 fault and will often throw up all sorts of unrelated faults, funny shifting, no comms etc etc. A poor battery will also do this, but obviously start with the basics.

I agree, i've seen erratic codes or data link failures due to bad earth but the codes were from the stored fault code list...that completely strange "ideogram" makes me suspect a protocol hiccup
