    D2, 2000MY, 120,000 Km owned for 3 years.
    Repairs:
    year 1- Rear brake disks
    year 2- nothing
year 3- Crank position sensor and front brake disks

Including running costs I'm still $4k better off than if I bought a TD5 that didn't need any repairs.

I'm not sure exactly how many kms a week I do (it's stupid so I forgot the number) but it's easily double that so week to week fuel costs are an issue.

I also want to help my daughter's scout troop with towing their trailers, and if you've ever seen how scouts load up trailers, you'll understand where the ability to tow becomes important.

Money will come when (and if) I manage to sell the MG and there is no way I'll be able to borrow or add money to what I get from that sale so please, don't go suggesting I spend more, it's not going to happen. My son's keen on me to get a Subaru Forester and in some ways, that makes a lot of sense - though the towing capacity is relatively modest (1,400kg) it'd be nicer in the city and my off road needs fall well short of hard core off roading.

    Anyone want an MG?

If you do not mind a smaller car a Freelander 2 diesel might be the way to go.

Good on fuel, good towing capacity, lower maintenance costs. You can get a lot of car for your money with a Freelander.

That's not such a silly idea. I'd been scared off from the Freelanders by a read of the Freelander forum but I was really put off by it being smaller. However, now that the Forester has entered the arena, I should look at the Freelander again. The two tonne towing capacity is a big winner right at the start. The trick will be avoiding what seem to be a lot of expensive problems with them, and I think that boils down to (apart from the usual) careful selection of model. I don't suppose some Freelander experts are likely to find this thread rather than me starting a new one in their forum (you can have too many threads running ya know).

the freelanders are good cars, my sister has had two of them. the 2nd one is newer and a td4 and is a better vehicle than her original freelander which had one of those sealed motors in it. which is great until something goes wrong with it. that being said, nothing went wrong with it that i can remember? her td4 is very economical and responsive.
ive got a 2000td5 with over 330000kms now, auto, and its not slow either. it has a ecu tune though, but it wasnt slow before. comparing it to the patrols, rodeo, etc ive have had, it has always been a lot faster than that. it had a delayed throttle response for a while but cleaned up a couple of sensors and the beast is back!
but back on the freelander, as long as you have a td4 one, it is a reliable, trouble free vehicle. my sisters had a broken turbo, but that is through no fault of its own. the car performed well for the time it had this issue, and since it was fixed it has been even better. is a comfy, roomy car. one of the best small 4wds you can get. she even drove it though our parents creek bed. haha. ill try save and share the video. where they can go is extremely impressive!
