    Coolant? Leak

    Hi Guys,

chasing a leak of what looks like red Coolant from under my passenger side front. I had an auto transmission replaced by TRS in Adelaide about 3 months, they also replaced all hoses and clamps. Lately I've had coolant drips and small puddles on my driveway in the mornings and later in the day on the work carpark. Not significant puddles, but there none the less. Also not every day but most days.

Ive had the car back to TRS twice, with the thought that the water pump was failing, but they've ruled that out. It only has signs of a very slight weep, and hasnt gotten any worse in the last 3 months. (Thats included a 2000km trip to the snow). TRS have had it on the pressure tester for over an hour on 2 occasions, and not been able to find any leaks.

The header tank level has dropped about an inch over the past 2 weeks, since TRS filled it back to the correct level. The puddles are also on the opposite side to the overflow.

I'va attached some photos from under the car, hopefully someone will have some ideas about where to look. I'm not particularly mechanically minded (crazy, especially since I own a D2!!!) but willing to have a go.

Car is a 2003 D2a, auto, 271,000kms. Auto trans replaced at around 260,000kms

    I have a similar leak.
I recently had the water pump bracket off as there is an oring between the big bracket & the block, thought it was leaking from there only to find there was no trace of it leaking from that oring or the water pump orings.

looking at the block i found it was weeping coolant from the oil cooler housing to block gasket, toward the front near the waterpump
I had the oil cooler off when i fitted a new head a while back.
I dont really know why it weeps, I put a new gasket & sealant on the oil cooler housing, & radiator pressure is low
The red coolant seems to make leaks!!
Another job to do again before summer

Looking at the pictures I can see a stain on the bottom of the water pump.
I suspect like the fuel cooler once any heat is the system from running the leak stops.
Did TRS do the testing with a warm motor or after it had sat overnight with out being started?
Add to that the you said it is already a known leak point and it will only get worse over time.
I'd do the water pump(at 270k it's probably due) and as suggested the O ring on the bracket.

Also have a look at the round screw in plug behind the exhaust manifold that screws into the head.
While there check that little hose that lives behind the turbo.
I'd be sure TRS would know of these but it's worth double checking.
    Cheers, Kyle

The pressure test was done after i drove 1/2 hour to TRS, so warm. Also noticed recently that it leaks more if im parked on a slight uphill.

looks like i'm up for a new water pump

    cheers
