Hold the stub axle in your hand, and belt downwards with the other. Don't b shy about it. However if you have already damaged the face of the bearing,....
2001 Disco TD5
In the process of replacing a torn CV boot and have removed the axle shaft and hub as one unit.... i.e. I have not undone the 340ft lb axle nut.
I have tried to knock the CV joint apart but it will not budge. I now have several dents on the outer race of the bearing and am reluctant to whack it any more as I risk shattering the bearing. Anyone have another suggestion as how to seperate this unit without causing further damage. From what I understand, it is only a circular retainer on the end of the shaft that is holding it together.
Also should mention that I am currently in a caravan park in Exmouth with limited facilities available. My current thinking is trying to use the hydraulic jack to somehow press the shaft/bearing off. This should have been the easy part !!![]()

exactly what I did to start with.
the blows got progressively harder and it should have let go
I finally used a heavy sledgehammer and a piece of alluminium between hammer and the bearing and a succession of fairly heavy blows ... still won't budge. The shaft is slightly loose in the bearing and you can feel that it is only the retainer that is holding it there.. but it just wont come out. The only thing I can think of is that the retainer has a flat warn on it instead of being round and therefore it will not ride out of the groove.![]()
