Cant they just make the front half shafts to suit?

I once had a pre metric RRC diff broached to accept Jackmac axles by Jacmac who also supplied the axles. So it is possible to have the diff female splines increased in size . Maybe talk to Jacmac who have had a lot of experience with various combinations. Be polite .
The problem could arise that the MD female splines are bigger than the D2 axle splines ( which I think they are for the rears at least) . Then you would have to have D2 inner axles made to suit.
So really you are in "suck it and see" territory where you should take out a D2 axle and compare the splines to your MD diff.
Otherwise it should fit.

The Definitive answer on Diffs...
I can tell you definitively the rear diff CENTRE from an Oct 96 D1 will fit in a D2a. I had to do it in Coen.
The difference is the pinion in a D1 is held in with a nut. The pinion in a D2 is held in with a bolt. But it doesn't make any difference to bolting the rear propshaft back in.
In fact Ashcroft only sell the bolt type to suit both D1 and D2.
Now if the front and rear diffs are the same on the D2 I assume they are on a D1. If this being the case D1 and D2 diffs are interchangeable. Leave P38 out of it.

Yes but the issue becomes the Maxidrive in the diff and the axles that come with a Maxidrive being completely different between D1 and D2. AFAIK they never made D2 Maxidrive axles.
The decider will be the spline sizes.
has the OP contacted MR Automotive?

Yes, they made them. At least they did in Mals day. These were a set that I had. They were originally built for the Bowlers and I was lucky enough to get in on a set.
