d1 d2 p38 and defender 24 spline are all interchangeable the only difference I believe is the drive flanges on the rear as d2s have rubber donuts

So I can yank the Maxi Drive out of the front of my 91 D1 and fit it to the front of my 01 D2?

    If a 91 D1 is like a 91RRC ( and I think it is) it will be 12 spline.
Although it may have Maxidrive axles in it so Hmm don't know whether they are the same spline count and diameter as D2 axles.
    Regards Philip A

I doubt it. D2/D2a are CV's and D1 are swivel hubs.

The center alone should fit depending on spline count.

If you're bringing rear diffs into it, the rears are not interchangeable. The P38 rear diff that was used in the P38 and Defender wont fit into a Rover type housing. The bolt in section on a P38 is slightly larger than a Rover type. Although they are basically the same, very little is actually interchangeable between the Rover and P38 diffs.
    Cheers
