    Towing with the ZF4HP22

What the general concensus ... ?

Is the box up to towing in 4th ... or should 3rd be used ?

    I have a 1300-1600kg camper trailer ... plus the load in the D2 (2 adults + gear) 4T+ ...

With 265/70 tyres, 3rd lockup at 80-85km/hr is approx' 2450-2600rpm. It towes acceptably and this is how we currently make our progress. Coolant temp is around 85-87deg , returns around 12-13L/100 ... Shift to 4th and encourage lockup and the revs drop to 1770-1800rpm and runs out of steam at the slightest incline, ... the cooant temp rises by about 5deg.
At 90 its about 1990rpm, 100 is 2230rpm (all speeds per gps/nanocom ... so my speedo reads less) ... same 5deg coolant rise.

The 265/70 tyres are about 6% larger and the untuned Td5 is lackluster at the low 4th rpms ... I can get the wick wound up, but if 4th isn't up to the job then the gearbox/torque converter is going to end up taking one for the team

    In 3rd lockup at 90 the rpm's are 2725 ... 100 is 3045rpm ... too high

    What say you ... ?

    Best way forward ...?

... or is the 80-85 pretty much it ?

When not towing it all works well, no issues, it travels well.
... and no, I don't want to sell it and buy a manual

Interesting... from my experience towing in 4th is fine.

My van grosses out at 1.8 tonne and I have no problem towing at 95-100 in 4th. My usual practice is to select 3rd on a hill before I drop below 80kph. Tyres are 245/70. Rest of the car is bog standard.

Best fuel economy I've seen is 13.5l/100k. Normally I get low 15's.

    Cheers

    Whats your problem?
run a cooler, change the fluid regularly and your good to go.
I usually run in normal mode so it doesnt kick down at the drop of a hat,,

I use 4th in sport mode on the flats, but when it becomes undulating I stick into 3rd gear so that it stays locked up and doesnt heat up the ATF. Hot ATF is what kills these transmissions.

Just had my auto box reconditioned, and advice from the auto guy was tow in 3rd, at 80-85km/h. Also, treat it like a manual. Start in 1st, and move through to 2nd & 3rd at appropriate times.

Just been to Sydney & back with a 22' caravan, family of five, and seemed to do it comfortably at 85-90km/h. Also seemed fine at 100km/h on the rare occasion I overtook someone too, but we planned the trip so there was never a reason to rush any faster.

Coolant temps never a problem, but EGT were an issue on long hills, so I just backed off to 60 or 70. It's worth putting in a pyrometer - it wold have been easy to push the EGT and not know it from the way the car handled.

Mine has 245/75 16 wheels. I tow a 2.6 ton full height van. I'm also chipped & intercooled + boost at 20psi. Towing at 90 in third lockup =20l/100km, temps - engine 90, gearbox 70, EGT 450 ish. Towing at 95 + to stay above 2000 rpm, temps - engine climbing, gearbox 70, EGT climbs to 650 easily, fuel 20l/100.

Unless I can contain the temperatures in 4th which is actually a fair bit of the time, I have to tow in 3rd. Depends on the conditions. A slight tailwind makes a huge difference & we will actually tow UPHILL in 4th.

It's amazing how much you can lift off to cool the temps & not actually have any change in speed.

2.6t of Shark Cat towing at 115km/h on oversize tyres was a breeze...

Used sports mode and manually dropped to 3rd on approaching hills to keep it on the boil...

A decent cooler upgrade is worthwhile - i had a P38 cooler fitted in place of the stock unit.
