I've got a loud rattle coming from under the car whenever the car sits between 2,000 and just below 2,500 RPM. It only happens when I'm in gear (auto), not when I've got it in neutral sitting still revving it. I've looked underneath and the only loose thing I found with a quick play was the heat shield above the exhaust silencer moves around side to side but not up and down on the bolts. It just has those metal clip on the bolts holding it on, there are no nuts, should there be nuts? What else could be making the sound? It sounds more like metal shield is loose banging away.
Ahhh the notorious td5 auto harshness!
They all do it mate. There's a thread on here about td5 vibrations, well worth a read of the 40 odd pages

Put it in first take it up to rattle, and gently apply the handbrake, if the rattle goes away while holding those revs , adjust your handbrake.
Took about 30 minutes to find a consistent answer in that search, 1240 search results in Google alone... for AULRO forums :/ . A wide variety of items including collapsed engine mounts causing the good vibrations, of which I also have collapsed engine mounts. More and more responses being the handbrake.
I'll try this tomorrow arvo as this seems to be the consistent answer I'm finding in other threads.
This was the thread![]()

39 pages of not happening :P . Found the handbrake thing in a lot of other much, much smaller threads![]()
Hi Apocalypsse,
Below is a post of mine from sometime ago on this common issue.
"If you are going to replace the shoes and springs to get rid of the rattle there is a Land Rover Tech Bulletin No.0022 that describes a modification to the left hand shoe to rectify and the springs you should use (Red) to replace the original hold down springs. Also it would be good to get rid of the wear points on the back plate. The Tech Bulletin can be found on this site."
Nick
Tighten the turbo heat shield, that caused the rattle in mine.
Cheers, Nova
