I've had a dual battery located in the engine bay on the fire wall for sometime now, I've had to replace this battery twice. It is close to the turbo so I wrapped some core flute around it for the heat factor. Has anyone had dramas with batteries no lasting in this location before? Am I better off just biting the bullet and mounting one at the rear internally?

I recently fitted mine behind the rhr quarter panel made a hinged cradle that swings down to release the battery . That way I can keep my jack in its normal place and no need to change my starting battery to an optima or similar as carls trays can't hold a large dimension battery

Also a place in the states that makes them like SPROVER's. A bit pricey though ($300 USD) I couldn't get on to Carl or OD to buy theirs...
So they are no good here with the heat?
I fitted one of these Super Start Batteries > Products > Product List (These are rated for under bonnet use) in a tray by the turbo. Been there 18 months or so and its still good. My tray has an aluminium heat shield on the side closest to the turbo.

I've got an Optima D34 mounted in the same position on an ARB tray. Installed October 2011 ... so far no issues. You can see in the photo, the battery has a heat sheild wrapped around it, and the tray steel heat sheild on the LHS was turned 180deg to allow the battery tie down to be fitted, and still provide heat protection from the turbo. Leaves a bit of extra air space between the sheild and the battery instead of being hard against the side of the battery.

I Have an ARB tray which cost $85 and sits up next to the turbo on aTD5.
It is designed for a 42AH battery , but with a few mods will take an Optima 760CCA blue top.
The Optima is now 3 years old and seems to be OK and going strong with no leakage.
I have polished the turbo heat shield and fitted a stainless steel barrier shield which I have covered with ALDI reflective aluminium tape and also wrapped the battery in a battery blanket.
I run the Optima as my starting battery and have a 130AH ( claimed) AGM in the original cradle. The AGM also seems to be going OK , but has had a small leak from the negative terminal which now seems to have stopped.
I look after the batteries by running a trickle charger when they get down to 12.5V.
So Optimas seem to be able to take some heat as The car has done a lap including the GRR and outside temps up to 40C or so.
