    TD5 valve roller problem

I went to start the d2 this morning as per usual, however it was chugging and coughing like an old bus. I shut down and hooked in the nanocom thinking that it felt like a problem with an injector or something and the cylinder balance was way out on number 2.

I pulled the rocker cover off and was quite surprised to see one of the roller rockers on number 2 completely off the lash adjuster and just hanging around where it shouldn't be (it's the one for the valve toward the front of the engine, inlet maybe). I have not had a chance to strip it down any further but it was clear where the problem was at least.

Just after some opinions, I wont be able to do any work on it till the weekend.

Has anyone seen this before on a TD5? I change oil every 10K kms (penrite hpr 5/40 diesel) and have done about 30K kms since I changed the head gasket. It was running fine up until this morning. (google didn't reveal anything much)

Also, can I follow the necessary steps and remove the cam shaft without pulling the head again? There is no obvious damage on the camshaft like badly worn lobe. The rocker also looks like it tucked into a little void without jamming between any moving metal bits.

Best case scenario for me would be some sort of failure in the rocker itself. Can i just replace the roller rocker and lash adjuster and bolt it all back together? I so don't want to pull the head again.

    Thanks for any experiences offered.

I have seen this happen a few times , most times it was due to the head and cam carrier being assembled together with silicone which blocks the oil galleries that supply the lash adjusters , other times has been just a collapsed lifter (lash adjuster), you can change the cam followers and lash adjusters without removing the cam / head , you will need to remove the injector rocker shaft for ease of access, hopefully didn't bend a valve / crack a guide.

Thanks for the info discorevy! I used a non silicone jointing compound in a very thin application when I did the head gasket so I hope that the oil galleries aren't blocked. I removed the lash adjuster with a magnet and there was definitely oil in there.

I will get into it on the weekend. More info then.

    Bent or sticky valve :(

Unfortunately the valve is sticking down, which allows the rocker to fall straight out again. Probably bent by the rocker coming out, not really sure how it would bend otherwise.

Head off again I think. Repairs will have to wait till I have some money through so i'll resume this thread down the track. I will add some pics tonight once I have downloaded them.
