The nut on starter motor will drive me nuts

    hi everyone.

I need a bit of assistance to remove the positive cable from the starter motor on my 2003 TD5 Disco. The red end cable has a metal plate which is currently stuck to the nut that holds it in place. When I try to undo the nut, the cable turns with the nut and won't separate.

I tried WD40 to loosen it but no luck. I also tried to hold the metal plate with pliers while undoing the nut, but it wasn't possible due to tight space and I also didn't wanna do any damage to the plate.

Would there be any other way to separate the positive plate from the nut? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Can

A "light" sharp tap with a hammer on the nut - in the hope of jarring it loose.

Its a horrible place to have this happen, there not easy to remove at the best of times

The nut on the starter motor is actually a nut and spring washer in one.

The end of the spring washer has probably cut into the metal eye crimped on the thick red wire to the starter motor.

If you can loosen the nut (obviously the wire will twist as well) enough to create a gap between the starter and the metal eye, you could then attempt to free the two by carefully tapping the terminal (not the nut) this should separate the nut and the eye terminal.

One you have the nut off put a flat washer between the nut and the eye crimp so it doesn't happen again next time.

Thanks for the useful tips. Much appreciated.

Tried it and didnt work. It's as if the two are welded together. Very annoying. Will have to see a professional i guess.

For around $10 bucks you could buy a can of freeze and release and give that a try , I find It does the job more often than not

If you can hold the eye terminal that the cable goes into and hold it still with pliers and use a socket and small ratchet to loosen nut, just removed my starter today.

Thanks mate. I tried that but no luck. Probably needs to be done when the vehicle is on hoist. That would give you more space to work from. I guess i found myself in a very awkward situation before even i could get to the nut from hell. Cheers.
