"That guy looking for a Disco"

    Hello all!

I'm keen to see what all this hoo-haa is about Disco TD5s. Looking at getting one very soon, as I'm over old Land Cruisers and Hiluxes (I still have a 60 series sahara floating around). Anyway I'd love to here about everyone's experiences with them and what to look out for when looking.

I'm keen on a manual but I'm also open to conversation on autos as I will be towing a car up and down the coast of NSW/Vic hence undecided on which box to get (I do prefer manuals but) The approx weight of the car/trailer and gear is around 2ton so anybody who has towed that sort of weight around I'm happy to hear your thoughts.

Cheers everyone and I'm looking forward to hearing back.
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

First thing to do is decide what features you want, then start looking and drive as many as you can before buying:

    I would go for:
Auto - much better for towing and off roading.
SLS - self levelling air spring rear suspension

And if you can find one, get one with ACE.

Have a look on YouTube at 'Discovey 2 launch' video which explains SLS and ACE.

THe main thing against you is age of the vehicle esp related to the Auto life - they last between 250 - 350 k km on average.

But the TD5 engine is a gem and will outlast the rest of the vehicle if not overheated.

Lots of reading here in various threads so do some searches.
    Cheers

    Simon

    What Simonmelb said.
You will also need to decide if you want central diff lock or not. I personally think it is an advantage to have - My 02 did not have the internals and I retro fitted a CDL kit. Well worth the mod. Have a search and it will tell you the years that do have it and years that did not have the internals.
I think many will agree that the D2a is the pick of the bunch.
The TD5 will not have any problems pulling 2t. I travelled throughout central Oz towing around 1.5 to 1.8t and you barely knew it was behind you at times. Mine is an auto.
The Auto and exhaust manifolds on the TD5 are two of the most common problems to look out for.

True, It's what I ended up buying after looking at Discovery Series 1 and Discovery Series 2.
It is the CDL that counts.

Thanks everyone, I'm slowly going through the forums, getting an idea what to look for. Anyone else towed with their TD5? That's pretty much the biggest thing I'm looking at finding out. Things like Fuel, braking, how the car reacts to hills etc. The more info the better as this will be towing a lot of K's. Cheers all.

I pull a regal 18' caravan with my TD5 manual Disco2 and its not a problem with pulling and fuel economy is good around 15l/100, one of the best cars i have ever driven and i have own a few and driven more, mine is on 50mm lifters , it came with them ,but next time i would look for genuine air bag suspension,(or some one has a set sitting in the garage thy are not using , i know a good charity thy would like to use them lol)
As some one else said the engine is as strong as a mule, but does tent to leave its calling card ,(oil leaks) mind you at just under 300000 maybe its aloud to,
It is not the most powerful engine on the planet , don't expect it to go like a new turbo diesel engine
I am in a love hate relation ship with mine love it to drive but, i hate the oil drips

From 2002-2010 mine was used to tow a dingo (one of those mini bobcat things), along with all its accessories etc. Since then I haven't done much towing with it, towed a daewoo Lanos for a few hundred k's. It's not super powerful but it's not slow. I drove my dads 2010 patrol common rail 3.0TD towing a trailer with a bed in it and I was surprised with the lack of power particularly up hills, in that scenario I would choose my td5.
