    Transfer Hi/Low switch - Computer reads reverse

    Can anyone throw some light on this please ......
    Both VDO Contisys and Snapon diagnostic tools indicate the computer reads Hi range when the car is in low range, conversely the computer reads Lo range when the car is in neutral and high range. Further, the HDC does only operate in Lo range as per specification.
    Do I have a problem, or is this only a problem with the diagnostic tools???


    It has me very confused!

    It's a well known glitch of the diagnostic software, that's how they do, your hi/low switch is ok

    Is there any possibility of the high and low range maps being swapped around?

    Thanks all, thought this to be the case, but thought I should check.


    Disco - don't expect any alteration as the vehicle has only 130k on it and previously owned by a very elderly couple since new.

    Do you want to drive it in Hi with the Low map or vice-versa that's why you are asking?...cos then i might have an answer

    No, I just want it to work properly!
    But its been suggested that it may be why my car won't drive properly

    My desire is to run with the factory mapping - delay in Lo and quickest response in Hi. I do have a doughy response in high range, but this may be related to something else. Have had turbo actuator, injector harness and engine loom replaced (last two due to the ingress of oil back to the ECU).
    I am planning a computer remap to increase responsiveness, power and tractability, but need to be assured I have no underlying issues before I go ahead.

    from what i understand you've asked about swapping the Hi and Low maps cos you suspect that they are the other way around and that's why your car doesnt drive well... i doubt that cos with the Low map in Hi gear there would be overfuelling(black smoke) and agressive throttle response but if you want to make a test you just have to unplug the Hi/Low switch on the transfer box, bridge the pins in the plug and go for a drive, this way you'll be in Hi gear with Low fuel map if you see what i mean

    I suspect it is only the diagnostic interface that has the issue. Because when in low range the 'mode' button on the auto allows you to select 'M' manual mode in high range the 'mode' button' allows you to select 'S' sports mode.

    I know this is the auto ECU talking to the BCM, however there is a good chance the engine ECU uses the same sensors. If the mapping was wrong they would have noticed the issue 10 years ago.
