IMO check the glow plugs first of all
My Td5 has just started to blow black smoke at idle when first started.
It only seems to do it at idle and eventually it stops smoking.
If I give it a bit of a rev it stops for a few seconds and then returns.
It only seems to happen after sitting for a long period. I am thinking of an injector leaking fuel into the cyl when it has been sitting for a while.
Any ideas anyone?
Dave.

Unburnt fuel will be whiteish not black.

I would keep a very close eye on the oil level.try and check on a level spot in the same place daily. You may have a leaking injector seal or crack in the heads fuel channel.
An increasing oil level is bad and requires immediate attention.
Failure to do so may result in an engine run away which will result in a total engine failure.

I meant if they work, unplug them in situ and measure resistance with multimeter across the glow plug's terminal and engine body, you should get 0.9 Ohm on a good one, then leave one unplugged, ask somebody to turn ignition to 2 while you measure voltage across the connector and ground to see if they get feed, if one is getting voltage usually they all do and it means the relay is OK, the fact that the warning lamp comes on doesnt mean they work cos it's managed directly by the ECU it will come on even if you remove the relay and all the plugs

Why would faulty glow plugs cause black smoke at idle?

Cos they are not only for start up, they have a post heat operation too and black smoke is a symptom of non-working glow plugs after cold start(untill the coolant temp exceeds 40*C):
IMO better check them cos it's not hard and it's good to rule them outOriginally Posted by ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - TD5; DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 18-1-31
