Question Front coil to air conversion D2

    Hi,
First post to the forum, some pretty good reads so far!

Recently 4WD Action showed a "custom truck" segment featuring a Patrol with full coil replacement air suspension, I would't mind that on the Disco. My thoughts are replacing rear bags with Boss tripples and also using them to replace the front coils, running new lines to the front and using existing compressor. Still unsure about spacing the bags, however that is an option also.

I've done a lot of research and feel like the airbags are more versitile in every way from ride comfort, corrugations, load ability and suspension travel. Plus lowering the vehicle for the shed and carparks is a plus.

Is there anyone who has done this to their D2; or can shed some light onto my thoughts.... pros/cons?

    Cheers

I prefer good springs and Bilstein shocks (all round).but at the very least you would need engineer approval.

    Why?

Nothing geometrically is changing assuming the standard ride height setting is legal.

No different to changing your springs...

    Discoramo, it's not that simple...

The bags for the front need to be different to suit the desired rates up front, and packaging.

The front end also needs to be independently controlled, you cannot simply plumb into the rear system...

It needs height sensors, it's own valve block etc, you may be able to use the compressor and air tank, but you'll be working it twice as hard. There are a number of aftermarket air suspension controllers to choose from. I suggest doing research into what's available, how they work and what they do.

You may be able to use RRC EAS front bags with custom bellows, but your budget is going to have to be in the range of 1-2k PER AXLE to have it set up.

When I priced it all up I pushed the idea right down the list... might do rear SLS, unsure as yet, coils don't have a limp mode!

Other states might allow but in Qld its a no go. See point 8 of 10 illegal vehicle mods

I honestly don't know why you would bother anyway... Having driven and ridden in a number of air suspended vehicles. Some are good, some not.

I'm just ready to upgrade the suspension I like to explore all systems before comitting the hard earnt $$. If it were a simpler install or there was a money tree funding me I would probably go for it. Maybe I just stick with coils in the front... for now...

    Thanks for your input!

I have the Boss 2603 tripple bellow bags in the rear of my D2. They are different to say the least, totally different to the original offering by landrover. I have these coupled with Bilstein 7100 series shocks, and Kings medium duty 2" front. Front is great, rear is... well, it requires some fine tuning.
The upside of being able to adjust ride height doesnt justify itself against the time, effore, and R+D required to make it drive nice. Air reacts totally different to spring-steel, youd be for ever "fiddling" with shocks to get it to feel right.

Cool idea tho, if ur willing to stick it out, go for it!

I've thought about having air in the front to match the rear SLS but have since decided I couldn't be bothered.

However, I figured the best way might be to look at a Rangie P38a front axle - there are a lot of similarities between the D2 and the P38, might work.

    Cheers,
