I repaired my handbrake backing plate which had worn grooves from the brake shoes by welding them, and grinding them back about 2 years and 30KK ago.
I notice that now I am getting the hallelujah chorus back at 2300RPM.(2002 TD5 auto)
I spoke to Bruce Davis a while ago and he said that they brazed them as the bronze was more resistant to wear than welding.
I have a Mapp gas Bernzomatic but it may be too small to heat up a backing plate.
Has anyone tried to braze the wear lines and if so what did you do? drill holes through to anchor the bronze ?
I can get a Bernzomatic Mapp/Oxygen set at Masters for $195 but I don't know if that even would be big enough.
Any ideas welcome, but probably to get it done with an oxy /acetyline would cost more than a new backing plate.
Regards Philip A
Bronze will get into the structure of the steel once it's hot enough - no need to drill holes.
Sounds like a 10min job for someone that already has oxy-acet. I reckon a couple of beers would cover it if you can find someone friendly. Know any plumbers
Edit: heating on a gas cooker at the same time might be worth a go if you did want to try it with the MAPP gas.
