in theory, if the wheels and tyres are balanced and there's no play in the system, it shouldn't wobble.
Hi all,
I have had new steering rods, upper and lower ball joints, Bilstein shocks and Dobinson coils, new CV joints, new HD front track rod, and new stock steering dampner with a wheel alignment. Steering box is properly adjusted. At higher speed mid corner bumps cause the old girl to have signifcant feedback in the form of steering shake. It only becomes noticeable on rough road (potholes etc) at higher speeds.
I have a 2 inch lift and 31 inch LT tyres on factory alloys - so a bit of unsprung weight with a lift. The question is should I be getting some toe out dialed in or looking at a steering dampner that is heavier (I know the old addage that the stock dampner is good enough and heavier ones will just mask a problem etc, but I work on the theory that the stock one was good with stock (I know because the vehicle new was excellent in terms of no steering shake) but not necessarily lifted and signficicantly heavier tyres).
Cheers

First thing I would do is check (& lower) front tyre pressures.
What pressures are you running them at now ?
Kev..

Cheers. 32 in front. Because they are large 31 inch LT's with 80psi max and i have the extra weight of a TJM winch bar, rated tow points, rock sliders it probably needs more than the factory 28...
Cheers
Try swapping tyres front to rear to start with ,to try and eliminate balance issues, wouldn't go more than 1mm toe out , panhard rod bushes OK ?.
Thanks mate. Will try that although on the highway on smooth bitumen there is no balance problems. Panhard rod has just been replaced 2000k ago with an APT heavt duty one. Unfortunately i bought new genuine bushes but the lack of taper on the HD panhard rod meant that they would not press in and i had to use the nylon bushes that came with the rod (not happy about that)...
Cheers
Perhaps im going about pressures the wrong way. My placard says 28 front irrespective of load (interestingly my mates D2a says 30) and my slightly wider and longer footprint tyre (75 profile v factory 70) would have a considerably larger contact area at a given pressure vereus the original Michelin XPC 235/70/16...so mine have less pounds per square inch and thus i would need LESS pressure than stock pressures to give the same ride...i might experiment but going to say 28 seems too low.
Cheers
Haha...scatch the above. My tyres were already at 28psi in the front cold...I forgot that I had dropped them before my last highway trip to see if that would make any difference...clearly it did not!
So I will swap rear to front, but I would be surprised if wear patterns on the front could cause steering wheel wobble when hitting bumps particularly mid corner at higher speeds, but i could be wrong...I was wrong once before
Cheers
Not so much about wear patterns , more to try to eliminate dynamic balance issue, while the front is off the ground give everything a check
including levering on the panhard rod .
Maybe someone can educate me on the D2... What is the swivel pin set-up? How does it work compared to a D1? If this was a D1 I would be strongly suggesting swivel pin preload is too loose.
Has this problem only occurred since having new gear fitted, like CV's? Maybe somethings not properly installed/torqued.
