    Just re-read that you think its oil smoke , if your intercooler is full of oil that can happen, remove the drivers side intercooler hose and see if it flows out , if not start the motor with the hose off , does the smoke reduce when revved , if not , see above post .

    Thanks for this, unfortunately I think this is the problem.

    If it were residual oil in the exhaust I doubt there would be as much smoke under load and it would not account for the significant loss of power.

    I like learning and gaining experience but not the inconvenience. I only have myself to blame though, I shouldn't have been driving that hard on an old engine. I won't drive it over 120 again and I will not keep driving once I see smoke (the power loss happened 5 minutes after the smoke began)!

    I cleaned the hoses and intercooler with kerosene and blew it out with the leaf blower (good trick someone posted on this board) so I don't think it is the problem, however I'll check.
