hi, I'm interested to know how you monitor the temperature? Thanks
Now after clocking up a few kms on my overhauled ( done by me ) and modified trans so far have done 7 trips between Brisbane and Sydney bringing much needed stuff down after getting ripped off by a removalist.
On my last trip back up to Brissy noticed trans temp would increase as speed increased had not done that before and the previous trip towed down a large furniture trailer back to Sydney.
Thinking on possible causes came up with three (driving at night so plenty of time to think with empty roads) slipping clutch pack, low on oil or filter getting blocked causing pump cavitation. Had pulled up and checked for signs of oil leaks but none so ruled out number two.
Could not notice any slippage of clutch packs while driving but still possible, so when I got to Brissy Saturday morning bought a trans filter from MR automotive and went to a mates place to change filter and oil I was actually planning on doing this when I got back to Sydney.
Dropping the oil and pan oil was still a good colour nice and red a bit of crud in bottom of pan but expected as everything beds in and high spots get knocked off, stripped filter to have a look as expected a bit of stuff there too.
Put everything back together had a beer with mate and returned to load up car and connect boat drove back Sunday night outside air temp was the same going back trans running a lot cooler back where I expect it to be when on highway with converter locked at highway speeds.
So leaning towards filter being blocked will do another filter change next 5000 kms to check should be less crud floating round now as everything should be well and truely bedded in.

Cut a section out of steel tube on pump out let fitted a tee piece and a redarc guage to read temps, i posted pics of fittings on an earlier post when i overhauled the transmission.
Can post a pic later when i get home

What are the gear ratios in the auto ? is top gear overdrive ? I never tow any thing bigger than a small trailer using overdrive, auto or manual.
What temps are you finding with the guage ?

4th is an overdrive, empty vehicle sitting at highway speeds outside air temp mid 20s it will sit around 65 to 70, towing a load will sit around 80 temps do go up with converter unlocked but now find with fitting EGT gauge and the temp gauge I find I have changed my driving style.

Sport Mode?
Other than the known "slippage equals heat" thing I have no expert knowledge, but I dont run in sport as I dont wont the auto to change out of top. I'd rather have it load up than go into an unlocked 3rd situation under a high load.
just my thoughts Stevo,,

I did try sport found heat built up quick, so i tend to keep it in 4th for as long as possible then before it goes into 4th convertor unlocked will change it into 3rd and it tends to go into convertor lock up quicker, found this tended to keep trans temps down.
