    I have heavy breathing

    I have just replaced my 1999 td5 engine with a 2000 one.
I found that there was a big drip of oil on the inlet pipe where the EGR was.
Having just cleaned the intercooler No oil to speak of, I had decided to re route the crankcase breather pipe to atmosphere.
I took it about four kms. up the road and back and idled it in the shed for about a minute.
I could smell hot oil . I opened the bonnet and found quite a cloud of hot oil vapor pumping out of the lower end of the extended crank case breather pipe.
I am NOT losing oil level in the sump.
My question is . Is this a normal thing or is it because it was not fully warmed up or maybe even just because of the minute of running at idle.
I just hope it is not a heavy breather that I have spent my hard earned on.
The new motor only has 151 K on it.
I have now put the original breather pipe back on and it runs to the usual valve near the MAF.
    All advice welcomed. Nick

A few folk have fitted Provent catch cans for the vapour.

Put Provent into the LH Google search box below when your up for a read.

Td5 is a very heavy breather.
There's a theory that the oil that gets trapped in the intercooler also traps some of the dust that gets let in through the crapppy airbox lid.
I'd say it's normal, fit a provent as alien mentions if it's bothering you.

IMO you can't just mess with the crankcase emmision controll on a Td5, the pressure in the crankcase must be under controll cos at high revs there can be a depression in there that's why the depression controll valve is fitted also as the gasses are part of the intake flow, the lack of them can mix up the air flow reading too... i made live tests and the MAF readings were different at middle to high range with connected and disconnected breather hose or with faulty valve

The breather valve is a depression limiting valve which progressively closes as engine speed increases, thereby

It is important that the system is airtight so hose connections to ports should be checked and the condition of the
breather hose should be periodically inspected to ensure it is in good condition.
