Unlikely to be the volatiles wafting off in the breeze Modern oils dont do that. If the engine oil has been changed regularly with another brand/grade of oil that can account sometimes for it. The engine has to "work in" to the new type of oil. If you know the old type that was used you can try it at the next change and see if any thing happens. other than that give it a few thousand k;s ( yes it can take that long) and see if it gets better.
1 of the reasons I always stay with the orig oil if possible and always recommend others too.

I didn't think it was the volatiles wafting away. I'll stick with the Magnatec for now. I'm suprised to have run up 10k kms in 5 months as most of the time it is the 7km work run.
I'll see how the next 10k kms go.

if its not leaking out of the engine its going one of 4 places, in no particular order

1. past the rings
2. past the turbo seal
3. out the crankcase ventilator into the inlet trunk.
4. past a valve seal.

Any way of determining which option?
If it's the rings, I'm rooted,
If it's a valve seal, I guess take off the head? again rooted
turbo seal should be fixable for me I guess.

You might want to get a bit scientific and check exactly how much your using before doomsday scenarios, was the car switched off the same amount of time both times you checked?, was it level ,how many kilometres between checks, . etc.
Run engine at operating temp and unscrew oil cap , how much blowby do you have , if not much , then I wouldn't stress too much, if its lots then most likely your compression rings are gone . It is possible to burn oil even if you have no blow by if you have a stuck or clogged oil control ring( this is unlikely in a td5) .
If you need to do valve seals the head doesn't have to come off, were they done with the head gasket?
If you are burning oil you (or someone behind you) should smell it over the diesel smell

Valve stem seal replaced as part of the work on the head.
I'll check the oil level when parked at the same spot and start gathering data.
I'll check the blow by as well.
The car has not used any oil for about 8.5 to 9k including a trip to Canberra and back.
I do not see or smell oil from the rear. A bit of black smoke when revved up slightly, not much at all. (Oil smoke would be blue?)

2x 7k runs a day in a td5 is not a good run. hell its probably barely enough for it to put the charge back into the battery.

yes, oil burning in a diesel at idle is blueish, when its working it tends to black with higher EGT and if it gets bad enough a runaway engine.

I've removed the oil filler cap with the engine running at operating temperature. No blow by visible. I can't feel any movement of gas out past my fingers.


As for the 7k to work run, I guess I'll have to take a longer route to work then :-)
