    badly wandering steering help

howdy folks, apart from the trans issue (which i think my transmission is infact immortal because everytime i think it has died, it seems to come good again haha)
but i have a really badly wandering disco. it is getting to the point that i cannot drive my car. it has had a wheel alignment, we have checked all bushes etc and cannot seem to find any play, shockers seem to be ok. i dont believe it to be the tyres. may or may not have 1 worn wheel bearing on the front left. not been able to confirm yet. steering feels extremely sloppy. so i am thinking its somethign to do with the actual steering and not suspension or bush related.
next port of call is to tighten the steering. power steering pump and the steering box are weeping fluid. return to centre has vanished. are signs of a not so good steering dampener a wandering vehicle? i know the dampeners help with return to centre so think there is at least some issue there. is there just one nut with the torx head screw thing to tighten the steering or is there another? if we cannot locate the issue ill have to book the beast in with the professionals as my car is not really safe for a normal person to drive let alone a disabled driver. its down right scary :O it was pretty ok until about 6 weeks ago and it was just suddenly everywhere!
so if anyone has recommendations of a place in south australia to take the disco to to maybe get to the bottom of this if cant find it at home, please share. otherwise will be trusty PCB as they are awesome!

If you want someone to have a good look at your D2's front end I'm willing to do that. I even have a spare D2 (ex V8) power steering box if it's needed. It's not particularly difficult to diagnose these things but it helps to have one person in the vehicle to move the steering wheel vigorously while the other feels all the bushes and joints. I'm more used to D1s and RRCs but I've wrecked a D2 so know what it looks likes under there.

PM me if you want to organise a place and time.

The damper does not return to centre. It is there to take the shock if one wheel hits an obstacle so the steering wheel doesn't reefed out of your hands.
If the problem happened suddenly, the first thing I would check is whether the big nut on the bottom of the steering box has not come loose. It connects the steering to the drop arm and steering rods.

Sorry to hear the dang beasty is still giving you probs. There has to be something drastic to make it go off the burner so quickly. Check the swivel ball joints, upper and lower each side. Get the front end off the ground and use a lever under the tyre to move it up and down.I know mine was affecting the steering before I got them done, and they were not real bad either.
Take bee utey up on his offer. The front ends are not that dissimilar in the basics. Just be wary, He says his experience with them is wrecking?
    Cheers Scott

Thanks all that big nut is first on the list, and its not been jacked up yet to check the swivel joints so will do that today. Its harder to turn steering wheel to the right then to the left but that might just be me as i am weak pushing the steering wheel up and around that way. (Spinner knob stuff haha) ill be in touch bee utey thank you
Yeah it happened really quick. It was ok. Towed friends float and her horse weeks back with no real wandering, now same float really can't tow as just goes everywhere. But car does without any trailers attached. At least the transmission seems to be ok still LOL. This car is my little bit of independence haha so it sucks right now as can't really drive it much

Just occurred to me - you haven't got the centre diff lock (if fitted) locked have you? This could possibly cause wandering.

Also, how about the really obvious ones such as low tyre pressure or loose wheel nuts?

Not sure if it helps but my car started pulling to the left. In the end it was the tyres. One side was more worn than the other and at a smaller rolling diameter. Swapped the tyres out and all good again.

I don't recall you saying you had adjusted the play in the steering box with the grub screw, but this can also help.

My Centre difflock isn't locked the cable is broken and ashcroft wanted a pic of it which ive not been able to take yet so have not been able to fix that. Its quite frustrating haha.
Tyres are good and they got rotated the other week. I dont have any scrubbing or odd wear and air pressure is ok. They are 2yo bridgestone desert duellers so not sure if they get floaty. Finally got around to tightening the steering box, it was extremely loose. I have not driven it yet but dad did and said it was a lot better. But ill see how it feels when i drive it. My transmission is leaking really bad ao even just parked it leaks. So been a bit distracted with that. I just want my car to be back to its normal glorious self.

Didn't get a mention before, but any of the linkage locating the rear axle having free play will cause the steering to wander.
