Plastic knocking noise inside headlining near grab handle???

    Hey guys,

a few weeks ago my disco 2 developed a very annoying noise. Like something plastic is loose and causing a knocking sound when car shakes vertically (bumpy road).

I was able to identify the area and I'm 99.9% sure it's coming from somewhere near the grab handle, inside the headlining.

    Any thoughts?

No it's in the middle just forward of the back sunroof indentation.

Maybe the bolt for the roof rail is loose? have you tried to move the roof rail?
AFAIK there is nothing else there that would cause a noise.
Even the back wiring loom is on the LH and switches across near the centre light.
Unless of course there are other things that you haven't mentioned like rear aircon .

Have you checked the plastic cover on the A pillar is not loose? I know mine is and when it rattles (usually at speed) the noise sounds like it could be coming from anywhere along the side of the vehicle.

there's a shaped block of polystyrene between the head lining and the roof, near the grab handle , i think its to soften the blow to the head from a side impact. have had couple rattle over years. .insert a piece of soft padding to pack it out .

Insert a padding between the poly thing and the headlining or between the poly and the roof?

So, tried driving with the door a bit open and the noise is much frenquently. It looks like it's coming from the same area (between the b pillar and the grab handle). What can it be?

So, recorded a video of the knocking noise that's driving me crazy. The door was semi open because I noticed this makes the noise more pronounced. (The noise still occurs with door wide open so not sure if it's related or not. BUT it does seem to decrease if I put a heavy rag on top of the door frame so it pushes the seal rubber harder)
