Yes, do it! Works very well.
I trialled a few before I got it right though.
For the record mine is a mid '99 build D2 with a Stage(2?) upgraded ECU with a hybrid turbo using a V8 Low Compression unit (part no; UHC 100 350 )
Tried a D2a unit ( part no: IGG 000 070 ) = didn't really make a lot of difference.
Tried a D2a(?) High Compression unit (part no: IGG 000 040 ) = didn't like the gear changes and seamed a bit erratic.
With my set up I found that it does indeed change up earlier.
It will lock up 4th at low 50C's Engine temp as opposed to high 60C's (68-69C) with a standard unit.(according to Nanocom)
It will hold 4th down to 60kms if you want it to, though feels better in 70km speed zones though wilh the engine doing about 1300rpm.
I don't do a lot of town/city K's mainly highway or 80kph back roads.
I have since upgraded my trans with a rebuilt trans and a HD Torque Converter and have been using a IGG 100 010 unit that came with the trans.
Might go out this arvo and try the V8 low comp unit in it and see how it goes...
More later...

Always good to hear positive experiences.
I got this v8 parts body out back and so won't cost anything. Just the motivation to get out there and then get under the dash to swap ECUs .. pain in the ... back!
My Td5, has a tune(came with car), and it has gobs of torque compared to the tdi, but it holds gears far too long for the torque that the tune produces .. and I'm really only comparing to the tdi.
Of course tdi uses kickdown cable and I have it set to change early in auto mode, but I usually choose my own gears as needed.
Arthur.
