    discovery 2 soundproofing

Can some one please help me. How can I soundproof the cab of my disco 2 from both the engine bay and the winning from the gear and transfer boxes.
I have tinnitus and I am finding it hard to cope with the volume of noise in the cab

Yes you can just fix the issues at hand
Honestly a d2 should be very quiet in the driveline department so you have some mechanicle issues .

As a fellow sufferer who does not tolerate some high frequency's very well I find playing cd's or tapes at a moderate level can completely mask those sounds, probably because the wide range of frequency's from the music slackens the ear drum.

As turning up the volume on your radio is probably not a helpful answer, try to get another Disco owner to drive it and see what they think. It should not be that noisy unless you have some faults.

While I dont suffer a hearing disorder as such, I've no doubt there is a bit of industrial deafness there, as in some odd tones I find incredibly annoying to the point of having to walk away, a 300tdi on idle has a particular tone that reverberates my hearing.

I'm guessing you have a TD5 auto? if so is it the overall volume of sound or, what a D2 TD5 auto does suffer is a harmonic like vibration thats most noticeable just on gear shifting.

    This is caused by a big list of items that have been well covered by me and others, the basic list is;
    *Worn engine mounts.
    *Loose expansion joint on exhaust.
*Loose counter weight on back of transfer case.
*Worn (or soft) figure 8 rubbers on exhaust.
*Inter cooler pipe touching plastic inner guard.

    etc etc...
    Regards
    Daz

Funny I consider the D2 to be relatively quiet with the windows up.

If you can hear transmission whine there may be something wrong as again my LT230 is very quiet, and my auto is quiet. The noisiest part is the engine!

Maybe someone has worked on the transmission and not sealed the transmission tunnel correctly. If it is a manual, I think there is a rubber gaiter under the vinyl one, Maybe it is broken. I remember my old 77 RRC was incredibly noisy until I discovered the gap in the transmission tunnel and the split rubber gaiter on the gearbox.

You can of course add pads to the doors , and also make sure that all the holes in the bulkhead are sealed. There is already quite thick sound deadening in the floor on the bulkhead etc.

I had a friend hop in the other day and comment on how quiet and smooth mine was , but CAVEAT HERE that was in comparison to his son's TD5 Defender.LOL

My biggest noise generators are; mud tyres and non standard exhaust, maybe slightly more engine noise from removing the acoustic cover . Prior to adding these things I thought the d2 was very quiet, much more than my d1.

I am looking at adding some Dacron poly batts to the roof area when I recover my hood liner.

Quite costly and time consuming would be to add sound deadener (brown bread, dynamat, fudd etc) to the floor of the disco, involves removing all ur carpet etc to stick it directly to the steel of the floor.

If / when you are confident there is no mechanical issue. It is also possible to buy Dynamat sound Deadening that can be placed on the floor, firewall and around the transmission tunnel under the carpet.

It is incredibly effective, only down side is it is expensive and heavy. It is often used my car audio enthusiasts so can be purchased from places like Autobarn.
