Rear seat not locking in place

    Hi all,

The 2000 Land Rover Discovery series 2 I just picked up is great. Seriously think it's awesome first 4x4 and just love driving it around.

The rear seats on one side don't click in correctly. They have two stages of folding up. The first stage folding the back rests down is the stage I have issues with. I have taken the cover off and taken a photo. When I fold the seat back up right I can put my finger and manoeuvre the rotation device back into place and this locks the seat into place. But if I give it a good hit with my arms it comes dislodged again.

It either seems that the spring has lost tension and I need to replace it. Or the cable is a little stiff. I have thrown some WD-40 up the cable path and over it generally to see if it would free it up but it behaves the same

Can I just get any spring of that size and replace it or should I replace the cable. The latter seems to be a pain as it would have to feed it up through the seat to the plastic lever up top of the seat.

Anyone know where I can get that type of spring of should any do?

Thanks again for your help. It's a pretty cool forum looking at all the variety of people's equipment on here. I want to get this seat fixed to get a kids seat in there to take them camping!

    Cheers

Not exactly the same problem but this may give you a lead

Also the site is another great D2 resource.

Hmm that's interesting. I did see some cable lube in super cheap yesterday so perhaps I get that and along with WD-40 try to free it up that way first before replacing anything.

I'll keep trying. Thanks for the link, I have come across a wealth of knowledge for Discoveries on the net.

    Thanks for the response

So it seems that cable lube didnt do anything to resolve it.

I removed the spring from the faulty seat with the spring from the other side that does work and it still didnt lock it in place. it seems that the cable is a little "stuck" ever so slightly. Ill either need to try replace the cable from a wreckers or take apart the housing up the top of the seat and spray lube from the top down to see whats making it stick.

Cant install the kids seat until i fix this one

maybe i can manually pull it in place so it locks and keep it that way for a while. remove the pulling trigger to unlock it temporarily.

Is this the dickie seat or the main rear seat?

I haven't checked a D2, but if it's the main seat and like the P38A, it might be that the seat isn't sitting fully home when back in the normal position. Something might be holding the seat up ever so slightly. That will stop the seat latching.

Maybe try silicon spray rather than WD40. In some instances, WD40 can actually soak up dust and become stickier.

So while trying the silicone spray today i noticed that when i put the seat upright the plastic lever on the shoulder of the seat sits higher and not flush like it should. I put my hand on it to force it down and it locks the seat into place.

So i contacted a wrecking place in vic for land rover spare parts and he said he could send me the parts i need. Ill buy these parts and see if that fixes it.

If not ill get new rear seats from a wrecker

Ok so whilst trying to not look crazy talking to myself in my own thread lol i thought id just update on trying to fix this issue in case anyone else runs across the same or similar issue.

So today i undid the cable completely from the rotating mechanism just for process of elimination. I left the spring in place and snapped the seat back in but no, it still doesnt latch correctly.

So i can confirm the cable isnt preventing the seat latching in. its just seems that the spring is **** weak. when i levered a screw driver and applied pressure to emulate a strong spring tension it locks in place. but as soon as i let go the spring just doesnt cut it it seems.

i placed the left hand side rear seat that does lock in places spring onto the right side and the same thing happens. So ive taken a look at the actual locking mech inside the rear of the seat but cant seem to find any discrepancies among the three locking mechs used.

If i cant get this solved soon i think i'll replace the entire rear seats! it may be cheap as theres a few disco2 getting around for wrecking on-line that i can enquirer about.

ill let you know how i go

I have decided to replace the rear right hand side seat entirely. Somethings not right about the seat i have. I cant get it to stay in place permanently so it has to come out.

Ive found one replacement up in newcastle from an old dosco 2 1999 for $50 which i can get freighted down. A place locally (canberra) quoted me $320!!! For the dxact same thing out of an non road worthy wreck 1999 disco2. What the!! So ill get the one from new castle freighted down and ill jnstall it myself then throw some seat covers over it all to blend it in
