    Flashing M & S

    Hi Everyone,

Very new to Landrovers, my father and I just bought a Discovery2 2002 TD5 auto with 200k on the clock.

Over all with the exception of a slight leak from the transfer case she is in great condition. With one exception.

We have started to see the M & S and D(selected gear on the dash) lights flashing as well as the two red lights either side of the gear selector.

Happens at random times, and I have done quite a bit of reading and have a couple of questions if someone may be able to answer?

What size battery should we have in her? The voltage was 12.7 off, and 14.x running.

Have checked the earths for the battery and they are clean and firm.

We also unplugged and checked (what we think is the right thing) on top of the gear box actuator (but again, we are not 100% we checked the right thing here)

What else should we be checking? After switching her off and back on it seems to clear and happily drive.

We took her for her first off road experience on Sunday and went flawlessly however yesterday and today just driving to work, 3 times on a 40k drive here. and once on the way home yesterday.

Not sure how to check the XYZ switch? When it is in reverse, put the windscreen wiper on and the rear turns on (even in limp mode)

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

    Welcome to AULRO.

If M&S light only flash on the dash it's battery related, your reading looks fine.
Your M&S lights include the ones on the selector so it's transmission related.

My suggestion is to clean the XYZ switch as it could be water contaminated from the air conditioner drain tubes.
Lots of information and links to the above repair in this thread...

Also check the wire harnes where it goes over the top of the transmission.
There have been a few cases of wires shorting due to the conduits be rubbed through.
    Cheers, Kyle

The rear windscreen wiper does do that, easier to see out the rear window when reversing.

    Cheers and welcome

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

I recently had to disconnect the selector as I removed the floor of the console.
The XYZ is properly adjusted when the dash indicator says the same as the selector, and the lights on the selector agree with the dash. I initially had mine a bit out but it literally fell into the correct adjustment when I loosened the jam nut.

    Hi guys.

Bit of a development. Well maybe.

I have noticed just before the lights come on the d on the dash flashes slightly. Then again. The the green m and s lights come on and limp mode.

Not sure if this is an indicator to the problem. Whitnessed this 4 times on the way home today. Somewhat frustrating off and on a bunch of times to get home haha.

    Hi,

Does sound like its XYZ related. They are expensive too so the above suggestion of cleaning it is the first step.

Low volts on the battery can also make this happen, I think N70 is the smallest battery you should have fitted?

Watch carefully, are you certain that the flashing symbol is D not a crossed B?

    I don't believe so no.

Definately appeared to just flash flash then flash flash and green lights came on.
